Scarita Summit, Sipote Waterfall and Dumesti Village from Cluj
A botanical reserve, a mountain summit, and a waterfall — all in one day from Cluj-Napoca.
This full-day guided tour into the Apuseni Mountains takes you from Cluj-Napoca to the Scarita-Belioara botanical reserve, a protected landscape sheltering rare glacial-era flora, nesting golden eagles, and panoramic ridgelines reaching 1,384 meters above sea level. The route is rated moderate and requires a reasonable level of physical fitness.
The hike begins in Posaga de Sus village, winding upward through a beech forest before emerging onto open alpine terrain marked by striking white calcareous cliffs. Along the way, abandoned wood hovels mark the transition from the lower forest to the high ridge, where the summit of Scarita offers unobstructed views over the Aries river valley and the Trascaului Mountains to the south.
Scarita-Belioara is classified as a botanical reserve, preserving plant species that survived the last glacial periods. The area also supports rare fauna, including several butterfly species and the golden eagle, which nests on the vertical cliff faces and holds the record as the largest raptor documented in Romania.
Following the descent, the itinerary includes a visit to Sipote waterfall and the remote Dumesti village, subject to available time. The day concludes with a return transfer to your accommodation in Cluj-Napoca.
