Humpback Whale Watching Expedition from Marina da Glória
Witness the great migration up close on the waters off Rio de Janeiro
This whale watching tour in Rio de Janeiro offers a rare opportunity to observe humpback whales during their annual northward migration, departing directly from the iconic Marina da Glória in the heart of the city.
Every June and July, humpback whales pass through the waters off Rio de Janeiro on their journey from Antarctica toward the warm breeding grounds of northeastern Brazil. The proximity of this migration route to the coast makes Rio one of South America's most accessible whale watching destinations.
An expert crew accompanies guests throughout the five-hour expedition, providing context on whale behavior, migration patterns, and marine conservation. Sightings typically include surface breaching, tail slapping, and close approaches that allow for extended observation.
The departure point at Marina da Glória places the tour in a convenient central location, with the open Atlantic waters reachable within a short sailing distance. The expedition is classified as moderate in difficulty, making it suitable for most adults with a general level of comfort at sea.

Itinerary
Guests meet the crew at Marina da Glória, located on Guanabara Bay in central Rio de Janeiro. A pre-departure briefing covers safety procedures, wildlife observation guidelines, and what to expect during the expedition.
The vessel leaves the marina and heads toward the open Atlantic, passing through waters where the humpback migration corridor runs closest to the Rio de Janeiro coastline.
The crew navigates the area in search of humpback whales, using experience and local knowledge to locate pods and individuals. Guests have extended time to observe and photograph wildlife from the deck.
Throughout the sighting period, the crew provides information on humpback biology, migratory behavior, and the conservation status of cetaceans in the South Atlantic.
After approximately five hours at sea, the vessel returns to the marina. Guests disembark at the same location where the tour began.
