Reykjavík Classic Whale Watching in Faxaflói Bay
A guided voyage into Iceland's richest marine waters, led by expert naturalists
Set sail from the Old Harbour into Faxaflói Bay on a Reykjavík whale watching experience guided by marine biologist naturalists who bring Iceland's ocean life into vivid focus. The tour runs year-round, tapping into a bay that supports thriving whale populations across every season. Encounters with humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises are recorded regularly throughout the year.
The bay holds more than whales. Overhead, puffins, northern gannets, and arctic terns work the surface in pursuit of the fish that fill these nutrient-rich waters. On the horizon, Iceland's mountain ranges frame the sea in a way that makes every moment on deck worth holding.
The vessel itself serves as a floating wildlife exhibition, with real whale skeletons, baleen plates, and bird displays allowing passengers to study what they may encounter before the boat even clears the harbour. A heated saloon, cafeteria, and complimentary overalls ensure comfort regardless of the weather.
Rare sightings of killer whales, fin whales, and long-finned pilot whales have been recorded on this route. While no specific encounter can be guaranteed, the crew follows strict wildlife codes of conduct to ensure all interactions occur on the animals' terms, prioritising the wellbeing of the marine life at all times.

How the Tour Unfolds
Arrive at the ticket office at least 15 minutes before departure. The office is housed in a double A-frame building; follow the red colour markers along the pier to find it. Staff will direct you to the boarding point a short walk down the harbour.
Step aboard Fífill, a converted fishing vessel turned floating wildlife exhibition. Walk through the hull to discover whale and dolphin skeletons, baleen plates, teeth, and a bird display that introduces the species you may encounter on the water.
Once settled on the whale watching vessel, your naturalist delivers a safety briefing and an overview of the wildlife likely to appear. Choose between the heated saloon or an outdoor viewing platform as the boat heads out into Faxaflói Bay.
The naturalist guides the group across the bay, sharing insights about marine behaviour and the local ecosystem while scanning for whales, dolphins, and seabirds. The crew adheres to strict conduct guidelines to allow natural interactions at the animals' own pace.
After approximately two to three and a half hours from boarding to disembarkation, the vessel returns to the Old Harbour. The surrounding area offers shops, restaurants, and cafés for those who wish to extend their time in the harbour district.
