Village Life in the Transylvanian Carpathian Mountains
Eight days of hiking, heritage, and authentic rural culture at the foot of Piatra Craiului and Bucegi
This Transylvanian Carpathian mountains village tour takes small groups deep into the rural heartland of Romania, threading together ancient Saxon towns, protected national parks, and traditional mountain villages that have changed little over centuries.
Departing every Saturday with guaranteed departures, the itinerary balances moderate hiking through limestone gorges and forested ridgelines with quiet moments in farming communities where local customs remain very much alive. Accommodation throughout is at family-run guesthouses and village inns, keeping the experience grounded in genuine local hospitality.
Certified by the ECO-ROMANIA ecotourism scheme, this tour is designed to bring visitors into contact with nature rather than in conflict with it. Every route, meal, and overnight stay prioritises local producers, sustainable practices, and the long-term wellbeing of the communities visited.
The landscapes shift daily, from the Gothic spires of Brasov to the panoramic meadows above Magura, from the iron-ladder walkways of Seven Ladders Canyon to the high-altitude tranquillity of Fundata, Romania's loftiest village.

Itinerary Overview
Transfer from Bucharest Otopeni Airport or Brasov Airport to your guesthouse near the historic old town. Depending on arrival time, an evening walking tour of Brasov's medieval centre is possible, followed by a traditional Romanian welcome dinner.
Morning visit to Bran Castle before hiking the ridge route connecting the Bucegi Mountains to Piatra Craiului National Park. The trail passes through forest and open meadows with sweeping views, arriving at the traditional hilltop village of Magura after approximately four to six hours of walking.
A full day's trek into the core of Piatra Craiului, crossing the dramatic Zarnesti Gorges and climbing through limestone terrain to the Curmatura mountain hut at 1,470 metres. The fourteen-kilometre route offers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Romanian Carpathians.
A fifteen-kilometre traverse linking several Carpathian foothills villages, including Pestera, Sirnea, and Ciocanu, ending in Fundata. The route provides direct encounters with rural architecture, farming life, and the cultural legacy of Romania's first official tourist village.
A shorter day walk exploring Fundata and neighbouring Fundatica, Romania's highest-altitude village settlements, set among lush meadows with panoramic views towards both Bucegi and Piatra Craiului. The relaxed pace allows for genuine interaction with local residents.
A day hike in Bucegi Natural Park visiting the Devil's Mill Waterfall and a traditional sheep farm, followed by a final morning excursion through the Seven Ladders Canyon on Piatra Mare mountain. Transfer to Brasov for a farewell dinner before the next morning's departure to the airport.
