Transfagarasan Road & Poienari Fortress: A Private Tour from Brasov
Drive the road to the sky and walk in Vlad the Impaler's footsteps on a full-day private journey through the Fagaras Mountains.
The Transfagarasan Highway has earned a reputation as one of the most dramatic paved roads in the world, cutting through the heart of the Fagaras Mountains at elevations that place travellers above the clouds. This private tour pairs that legendary drive with a visit to Poienari Fortress, the actual residential castle of Vlad Tepes, for a day that balances natural spectacle with medieval history.
Departing from Brasov, the route descends into the Arges River valley before climbing the serpentine switchbacks of the Transfagarasan. Along the way, the Vidraru Dam — a 166-metre arch structure completed in 1966 to generate hydroelectricity — appears dramatically from the valley floor, its reservoir stretching 28 kilometres of shoreline around the surrounding peaks.
The Fagaras Mountains contain eight of Romania's fourteen peaks above 2,500 metres, including Moldoveanu at 2,544 metres, the country's highest summit. The region's old beech forests, glacial lakes, and high-altitude meadows define a landscape that rewards slow, attentive travel rather than a hurried passage.
Tour Highlights
Drive the full length of the Transfagarasan Highway, Romania's second-highest paved road, on a private, flexible schedule.
Climb 1,480 concrete stairs to reach Poienari Fortress, the authenticated residential castle of Vlad Tepes, overlooking the Arges valley.
Hike to Balea Waterfall, Romania's tallest step-waterfall at more than 60 metres, set within a glacially carved gorge.
View the Vidraru Dam and its vast reservoir, an engineering landmark spanning 305 metres in arch length.
Reach Balea Lake, a natural glacier lake at 2,040 metres elevation, measuring 360 metres long and 11 metres deep.
Visit the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Carta and the working Sambata de Sus Monastery, two distinct chapters of Transylvanian religious heritage.
Pass through Dumbrava Vadului, an ancient oak forest where wild daffodils known locally as coprine bloom among centuries-old trees.
Itinerary
The tour begins with a private pickup in Brasov and heads south toward the Arges valley, entering the foothills of the Fagaras Mountains. The drive itself forms part of the experience as the landscape transitions from Transylvanian plains to forested mountain terrain.
Guests ascend 1,480 concrete stairs carved into the hillside to reach Poienari Citadel, historically documented as the genuine residential stronghold of Vlad Tepes. The fortress sits on a rocky promontory with commanding views over the Arges River gorge below.
The route continues to the Vidraru Dam, a 166-metre arch dam built primarily for hydroelectric production on the Arges River. The reservoir it creates, Lake Vidraru, has 28 kilometres of shoreline and sits dramatically among the surrounding mountains.
The ascent of the Transfagarasan follows tight switchbacks through high alpine terrain toward Balea Waterfall, Romania's highest step-waterfall at over 60 metres. This section of road, completed as a strategic military route, reaches elevations where cloud cover frequently sits at road level.
At 2,040 metres, Balea Lake is a natural glacial lake and the high point of the day's route. When conditions permit and the road is open, a cable car offers an alternative ascent to this point from the waterfall below.
The return leg includes the medieval ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Carta and the Sambata de Sus Monastery, both significant sites of religious and architectural history in the Fagaras region. The tour concludes with the return drive to Brasov.
