Tokyo Ueno: Audio Guided Walking Tour

The route begins at the alley dividing Shinobazu Pond, the main body of water in Ueno Park. Nearby, Kannon-do Temple — built in 1631 and one of the few structures in the city to have survived largely intact — sets the historical tone for the walk ahead.

Set on an island within Shinobazu Pond, Bentendo Temple was constructed in the early 17th century and is dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of wealth, wisdom, and music. The surrounding park area provides context for Ueno's origins as a vast Buddhist religious complex.

The Ueno Tosho-gu Shrine honours Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the shogunate that shaped Japan for over two centuries. A short distance away, Ueno Zoo — the oldest in Japan — is home to resident giant pandas Ri Ri and Shin Shin.

The National Museum of Tokyo holds the country's largest collection of Japanese art and historical artefacts, while the nearby Museum of Western Art occupies a building designed by Le Corbusier — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right.

The route passes through the campus of the Tokyo University of the Arts, whose founding institutions date to the late 19th century. Continuing onward, Yanaka Cemetery offers a quieter, reflective interlude with tree-lined paths and historical graves.

The Shitamachi Museum documents the everyday life of Tokyo during the Edo period (1603–1868), with a focus on the city's common people and local traditions. The tour concludes with a return to Shinobazu Pond, where the lotus beds create a distinctive seasonal landscape.
