From Oliena: Trekking to Mount Tiscali
Walk through ancient paths to a hidden village carved into a limestone cave in the heart of Sardinia.
This guided trekking excursion to Mount Tiscali leads you along 7 km of naturalistic trails in the Supramonte of Oliena, climbing 350 metres in elevation to reach one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites on the island. An expert local guide accompanies you through landscapes shaped by geology, history and culture that few visitors ever encounter.
The route winds through the rugged limestone terrain of central Sardinia, passing through gorges, native vegetation and rocky outcrops that reveal millions of years of geological transformation. Every step of the path connects you to a landscape that has remained largely unchanged since the Nuragic civilisation inhabited this region over three thousand years ago.
Upon reaching the archaeological site of Tiscali, you will find the ruins of a Nuragic village sheltered within a vast collapsed cave, hidden high in the mountain. The site is considered one of the most mysterious and evocative prehistoric settlements in the Mediterranean, and the guided interpretation makes the experience both educational and deeply memorable.
This is a moderate-difficulty hike rated as Hiking (E), suitable for those with a reasonable level of physical fitness and a curiosity for history and the natural world. The total walking time is approximately 5 hours, with additional time for exploration at the archaeological site.
