Oliena: Trekking to the Sa Nurre de Su Hoda Cave
Walk through an ancient canyon, step into darkness, and witness a single ray of light transform an underground world.
This guided excursion into the Sa Nurre de Su Hoda cave combines a scenic woodland trek through the Supramonte with a genuine speleological experience inside one of Sardinia's most atmospheric natural cavities. It is suitable for walkers of all levels and requires no prior caving experience.
Departing from Oliena, you travel by off-road vehicle to the trailhead before setting off on foot through a landscape of holm oaks and mastic shrubs. The path descends into the majestic Horojos canyon, a geological feature carved over millennia that sets the tone for what lies ahead.
At the cave entrance, your expert guide equips the group with speleological helmets and leads the way through a narrow tunnel into the chamber beyond. The guide explains how these natural cavities were used historically by local shepherds, connecting the geology of the site to the pastoral culture of inner Sardinia.
The defining moment of the visit occurs when a single beam of sunlight enters through a small opening high in the cave wall and illuminates the interior of a chamber that reaches up to 100 metres in height. The effect is striking and entirely natural, dependent on the angle of the sun and the position of the opening above.
