Thorsmork and Eyjafjallajokull Superjeep Tour
Cross glacier rivers, explore hidden ravines, and discover the valley that Thor himself inspired.
The Thorsmork Superjeep Tour takes you deep into one of Iceland's most dramatic and sheltered valleys, surrounded by the Eyjafjallajökull, Tindfjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. Over ten hours, a modified superjeep carries you across braided glacier rivers, into narrow ravines, and along the volcanic landscapes of Iceland's celebrated south shore.
Thorsmork's position between towering glaciers and mountain walls creates a microclimate that has long supported lush birch forests, mosses, and ferns — a rarity in Iceland's otherwise exposed terrain. The valley was historically used for sheep grazing and timber, but after the Katla eruption of 1918 it became a protected area under the National Forestry, preserving its exceptional biodiversity.
The tour also stops at Seljalandsfoss waterfall on the return leg, where a path leads behind the curtain of falling water originating from Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Depending on the season, the cave behind the falls frames a view of the sun descending toward the Atlantic horizon.
In favourable winter conditions, the itinerary offers an optional ascent to the summit of Eyjafjallajökull glacier for panoramic views across the southern region. This optional extension adds roughly three to four hours and may require adjusting other stops along the route.

Itinerary Overview
The tour leaves Reykjavik and heads east along the south coast toward Eyjafjallajökull volcano, becoming visible shortly after crossing the Hellisheiði mountain pass. The route follows the base of the volcano before turning inland along the glacier river Markárfljót.
The group stops to hike into Nauthusagil, a narrow cleft carved into the mountainside at the foothills of Eyjafjallajökull. The passage narrows progressively, with chains anchored to the walls for support, and ends at a secluded waterfall surrounded by dark basalt and green moss.
The superjeep crosses the glacial river Krossá, demonstrating the vehicle capability that makes this journey possible. On entering Thorsmork valley, the first stop is Gígjökull, the southern outlet glacier of Eyjafjallajökull, dramatically reduced in size following the 2010 eruption and subsequent floods.
The group arrives in the valley for lunch amid birch forest and mountain scenery. Those wishing to hike can ascend any of the nearby hills for wide panoramic views; Thorsmork serves as the trailhead for both the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðurháls long-distance routes.
On the return to Reykjavik, the tour stops at Seljalandsfoss, where a path behind the 60-metre curtain of water gives an unusual perspective on the falls. The water originates from Eyjafjallajökull glacier, and the cave behind the waterfall was formed through differential erosion of the cliff rock.
The tour arrives back in Reykjavik in the early evening, timed to allow for dinner in the city. Guests who opted for the Eyjafjallajökull summit ascent should note that this extension may adjust the overall return time.
