Theth to Valbone Tour: 4-Day Albanian Alps Hiking Experience
Ferry crossings, mountain passes, and remote villages in the heart of the Accursed Mountains.
This Theth Valbone tour takes you deep into the Albanian Alps across four days of ferry rides, highland hiking, and stays in traditional guesthouses far from the tourist trail.
The journey begins in Shkoder, a city that has served as a gateway to northern Albania for centuries, before a scenic crossing of Koman Lake delivers you to the remote valley of Valbone. From there, a challenging full-day hike leads over a mountain pass and down into Theth, one of the most isolated and visually striking villages in the Balkans.
The final day includes a visit to the Blue Eye of Theth, a natural turquoise spring set within old-growth forest, before the group descends to Tirana. An optional off-road extension to Doberdol Village offers a rare look at the tri-border region where Albania, North Macedonia, and Montenegro meet.
Tour Highlights
Cruise through the dramatic canyon scenery of Koman Lake on a three-hour ferry journey.
Hike the iconic route from Valbone to Theth, crossing a high alpine pass with panoramic mountain views.
Stay in authentic family guesthouses in both Valbone and Theth, with home-cooked Albanian meals included.
Visit the Blue Eye of Theth, a vivid natural spring that emerges from a forested mountain slope.
Explore Shkoder Castle and the city's historic pedestrian quarter on the first evening of the tour.
Optional 4x4 extension into Doberdol Village and the remote tri-border zone of Albania, North Macedonia, and Montenegro.
Itinerary
Meet the group in Tirana or at the airport and transfer north to Shkoder. The day includes an optional stop at the hilltop town of Kruje, where a traditional bazaar and medieval castle overlook the surrounding plains. Shkoder Castle and the city's lakeside setting provide a strong introduction to northern Albanian culture before an overnight stay in the city.
An early departure from Shkoder leads to the Koman ferry terminal, where a three-hour boat crossing navigates through steep canyon walls and emerald waters. Arriving in Valbone Valley, the group checks into a traditional guesthouse and settles into the quiet rhythm of this highland community. A home-cooked dinner rounds out a long but rewarding day of travel.
The most demanding day of the tour covers the full hike from Valbone to Theth, a route that climbs through alpine meadows and over a mountain pass before descending into the Theth valley. The trail takes approximately seven hours and includes a picnic lunch on the mountain. Accommodation in Theth is in a traditional guesthouse, with dinner and rest to follow.
The morning is spent on a hike to the Blue Eye of Theth, a natural spring of striking turquoise water nestled in the forest above the village. After lunch in Theth, the group departs for Tirana, arriving in the capital by evening. The tour concludes on arrival in Tirana.
