Best of Albania in 4 Days: A Private Journey Through History, Coast, and Culture
From the stone city of Berat to the Ionian shores of Saranda, discover Albania's most storied landscapes with a dedicated private guide.
This private guided Albania tour takes you through four days of layered history, coastal scenery, and authentic local encounters across the country's most rewarding destinations. Designed for travelers who prefer depth over speed, the itinerary balances UNESCO heritage sites with off-road detours and hands-on cultural moments. All transport, daily breakfast, and hotel accommodation are included from Tirana and back.
Albania remains one of the least-visited countries in Europe, which means its ancient cities, lagoons, and Ionian coastline feel genuinely unhurried. You will move through landscapes that shift from wetland reserves and rolling vineyards to steep Ottoman bazaars and ruined Greek theaters, all within a single, compact journey. A private guide accompanies you throughout, providing context that no signboard can replicate.
The route connects Tirana southward through Berat, Apollonia, and Gjirokaster before reaching Saranda on the Ionian coast, then returns north along the Albanian Riviera. Each stop is chosen for historical weight and scenic reward, and the pace remains flexible enough to allow time at the places that matter most to you.
Tour Highlights
Walk inside the living Berat Castle, a fortified hilltop community still inhabited today and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Join a hands-on Albanian cooking class in a local home, preparing two to three traditional dishes alongside an expert local cook.
Explore the ancient city of Apollonia, founded in the sixth century BC and once among the most influential Greek colonies in the Adriatic region.
Swim in the crystal-clear Ionian waters near the Ksamil islands, widely listed among the most beautiful coastal spots in the Mediterranean.
Cross the 270-meter wooden bridge to Zvernec Island, a pine-covered islet accessible only by footbridge and home to a historic monastery.
Wander the cobblestoned bazaar of Gjirokaster beneath castle walls lined with medieval stone facades and locally handcrafted goods.
Visit Butrint National Park, a remarkably preserved Greco-Roman site with a functioning open-air theater set within a protected UNESCO landscape.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Your guide meets you in Tirana and drives south toward Berat, passing either the Karavasta Lagoon wetland reserve or the lake-dotted landscape around Belsh depending on your preference. On arrival, you visit Berat Castle, tour a local family home for Turkish coffee and traditional sweet preserves called gliko, and take a stroll through the lower town.
The afternoon is devoted to a wine tasting session at a regional winery, sampling three varieties of Albanian wine and one raki. You then join a cooking class in a local household, learning to prepare two to three traditional Albanian recipes before sitting down to enjoy the meal you have made. The evening is free to explore Berat at your own pace.
The day begins at the ancient site of Apollonia, one of the most significant Greek colonies of the Adriatic, founded in the sixth century BC. You visit the Monastery and Church of St. Mary and explore the Archaeological Museum housed within the monastery complex.
From Apollonia the route continues south to Gjirokaster, a UNESCO-listed city of stone-roofed Ottoman houses climbing steep hillsides above a historic bazaar. You have free time to walk the cobblestoned lanes, browse local crafts, and explore the castle area before a free evening in the city.
You transfer to Saranda, a sun-drenched coastal city on the Ionian Sea with its own beaches and a relaxed southern atmosphere. A short drive from Saranda brings you to Butrint National Park, where Greek and Roman ruins including a well-preserved open-air theater are set within a lush protected landscape.
After Butrint you continue to the nearby Ksamil islands area, a stretch of turquoise Ionian coastline consistently ranked among Albania's most beautiful. There is time for a swim before you return to Saranda for a free evening.
The return journey follows the Albanian Riviera northward, stopping for a hike up to Borsh Castle at roughly 500 meters above sea level, with panoramic views over the Ionian coast and surrounding mountains. The castle, which also contains the only mosque along the Riviera, offers a compelling combination of military history and natural scenery.
A detour near Vlora leads to Zvernec Island, reached on foot via a 270-meter bridge through pine forest to a small island holding a centuries-old Orthodox monastery. From there, your guide drives you back to Tirana, completing the four-day circuit.
