Stand Up Paddle Tour to Benagil Cave and Algarve Grottoes
Navigate the hidden sea caves and golden rock formations of Portugal's most iconic coastline from the water
This guided SUP tour to Benagil Cave takes small groups of up to eight paddlers through a network of sea caves and coastal arches that larger boats cannot access, offering a quieter and more intimate encounter with the Algarve's geology.
Participants can choose to stand, kneel, or sit on their boards, making this an accessible experience for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. Expert guides lead the way, manage safety, and capture complimentary GoPro photos throughout the session.
The route passes through as many as nine hidden caves, including the Smugglers' Tunnel, Lovers' Cave, and Turtle Cave, alongside celebrated landmarks such as Benagil Cave and Praia da Marinha. Each stop is paired with brief storytelling about the geological and cultural history of the cliffs.
Note that local regulations prohibit stepping onto the beach inside Benagil Cave. Guests explore the full interior from their boards, which actually provides an unobstructed view of the famous oculus ceiling without the crowds found on the sand.
Tour Highlights
Access nine or more hidden caves unreachable by standard tour boats, including the Smugglers' Tunnel and Turtle Cave.
Complimentary high-quality GoPro photos captured by your guide at every key landmark along the route.
Groups are capped at eight participants per guide, ensuring a personal and safe experience on the water.
No prior paddleboarding experience required; guides adapt the session to the group's ability and comfort level.
A dry bag is provided to keep personal items safe throughout the paddle, along with a life jacket and wetsuit option.
The itinerary includes Benagil Cave, Praia do Carvalho, and Praia da Marinha, subject to sea conditions.

This tour operates along the central Algarve coastline near Benagil, a small fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa, in the Faro District of southern Portugal. The departure point is Praia de Benagil, situated between Carvoeiro and Armacao de Pera, approximately 65 kilometres west of Faro International Airport. The coastline in this area forms part of the Costa Vicentina geological zone and is characterised by layered limestone cliffs, sea stacks, and a dense network of coastal caves shaped by Atlantic erosion over millions of years. Benagil Cave, locally known as Algar de Benagil, is recognised internationally for its domed ceiling and oculus skylight and consistently ranks among the most photographed natural landmarks in Europe. The surrounding caves explored on this route, including Praia do Carvalho and Praia da Marinha, are protected under EU Natura 2000 conservation designations. The area is most accessible between April and October, with summer months bringing high visitor volumes to the beach and surrounding roads.
