Juncalinho Trail: Tope Simão Ridge Hike on São Nicolau
Walk the spine of the island where mountain meets sea on one of Cape Verde's most dramatic ridgelines.
The Juncalinho Trail on São Nicolau is a challenging full-day hike that takes walkers from a quiet coastal village up to the dramatic heights of Tope Simão, where both the north and south coastlines of the island come into view at once. At nearly 7 hours on foot, this route rewards those with strong legs and a genuine appetite for raw volcanic scenery.
São Nicolau is one of the least-visited islands in the Cape Verde archipelago, and its interior landscape reflects a geology shaped by centuries of volcanic activity. The path from Juncalinho climbs steadily through terrain marked by small crater cones, rugged ridgelines, and the kind of sweeping silence that only remote mountain environments offer.
The descent back into Juncalinho provides a completely different perspective, with the village's colorful houses coming into view against the backdrop of the Atlantic. The contrast between the high ridge and the shoreline below is one of the defining visual moments of this trail.
Highlights
Panoramic views from Tope Simão across both the north and south coasts of São Nicolau simultaneously.
Exploration of a volcanic landscape dotted with numerous small crater cones lining the coastline.
Ridge-line walking with open views on both flanks of the island for an extended stretch of the route.
Dramatic interplay between steep mountain terrain and the Atlantic Ocean visible throughout the hike.
Views of Juncalinho's colorful traditional houses as you descend back toward the coast.
An opportunity to experience one of Cape Verde's most remote and least-visited hiking routes.
Itinerary
The hike begins in the center of Juncalinho, a small coastal settlement on São Nicolau. From here, the trail heads upward into the volcanic highlands that define the island's interior.
The route climbs steadily toward Tope Simão, the high point of this trail. The ascent is demanding, but the increasing elevation brings progressively wider views over the surrounding ocean and coastline.
At the summit of Tope Simão, hikers can see both the north and south coasts of São Nicolau at the same time. Numerous small volcanic cones are visible along the shoreline below.
The trail continues along the ridge line toward Tope de Chuva, with open views on both sides of the island. This section offers sustained panoramic scenery and a true sense of the island's volcanic geology.
The final section descends from the ridge back toward the village. The landscape on the way down highlights the meeting point of mountain and sea, and the colorful houses of Juncalinho come gradually into view.
