Santo Antão: Hike Ponta do Sol to Fontainhas and Cruzinha
A coastal trail through clifftop villages, volcanic coastlines, and a beach where sea turtles nest.
This Santo Antão coastal hike connects three distinct communities along one of the Atlantic's most dramatic shorelines, tracing rocky cliffs, sculpted mountain roads, and black sand coves across a full day of moderate walking.
From the colorful fishing village of Ponta do Sol, the route climbs along sheer ocean cliffs before narrowing into a mountain path that winds through deep valleys toward Fontainhas, a village recognized by National Geographic as one of the ten most scenic in the world. The descent through Corvo and Formiguinhas reveals a landscape shaped entirely by volcanic forces and Atlantic wind.
A midday stop at Praia das Aranhas offers a chance to rest beside a black sand beach known as a nesting site for sea turtles. Swimming is possible depending on sea conditions. The final 2.5-hour stretch follows volcanic rock formations along the ocean's edge before arriving at Cruzinha, a small fishing settlement perched above the coast.
A return transfer to your accommodation is included at the end of the day, allowing you to recover after covering terrain that combines elevation change, coastal exposure, and genuine cultural encounter across the northern coast of Santo Antão.

Itinerary
The hike begins in Ponta do Sol, a waterfront fishing village with brightly painted houses set against ocean-facing cliffs. A road climbs steeply from the village, offering wide views back across the bay as the trail gains elevation.
The route follows a narrow, winding track carved along the top of a mountain ridge, flanked by deep valleys dropping toward the sea. This section leads to Fontainhas, a village whose position above the ocean earned it a place on National Geographic's list of the world's most scenic villages.
A steep descent follows from Fontainhas, crossing the hamlets of Corvo and Formiguinhas before arriving at Praia das Aranhas. This black sand beach serves as a nesting site for sea turtles and provides a sheltered spot for a picnic lunch and, where conditions allow, a swim.
The final section covers roughly 2.5 hours along a path that runs between volcanic rock formations and the open Atlantic. The trail ends in Cruzinha, a small fishing village with elevated views over the coastline.
A transfer back to your accommodation is provided at the end of the day. No additional navigation or logistics are required after reaching Cruzinha.
