Rueda White Wine Tour with Michelin-Star Lunch from Madrid
Discover the crisp Verdejo wines of DO Rueda alongside a certified sommelier, historic cellars, and a Michelin-starred seasonal menu.
This full-day small-group experience takes you deep into the heartland of DO Rueda white wine, where sandy soils, continental temperatures, and centuries of winemaking tradition converge to produce some of Spain's most distinctive whites. Led by a certified sommelier, the tour combines two contrasting estate visits, underground medieval tunnels, and a landmark lunch in the village of Matapozuelos.
Rueda sits roughly 150 kilometres north-west of Madrid on the Castilian plateau, a landscape of pale earth and open sky that may feel understated until you taste what grows beneath it. The appellation built its modern reputation almost entirely on Verdejo, a grape that thrives where vine roots chase moisture deep into the subsoil, producing wines of unusual aromatic intensity and freshness.
Travelling in a private, air-conditioned vehicle, the group stays small by design, with a maximum of eight guests ensuring access to areas and conversations that larger coach tours cannot offer. Both wineries have been chosen to present contrasting philosophies, from stainless-steel, reductive winemaking to older oxidative techniques that were once the regional standard.
Tour Highlights
Michelin-starred lunch at a celebrated restaurant in Matapozuelos, with a tasting menu or traditional suckling lamb.
Guided tasting of at least six premium white wines, including Verdejo, barrel-fermented cuvées, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Visit to a historic winery with monastic origins and rare oxidative vinification in outdoor demijohns.
Exploration of a 14th-century underground tunnel system beneath the town of Rueda.
Tastings led by a local oenologist at the final stop for expert regional context.
Vineyard walk explaining the vine cycle and how Rueda's terroir shapes its wines from the ground up.
Private return transport from central Madrid in a small-group setting of no more than eight guests.
Itinerary
The group assembles at the central Madrid pickup point and travels north-west by private air-conditioned vehicle toward the DO Rueda appellation. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes and the guide sets the scene with an introduction to the region's history and grape varieties.
The first estate has ties to monastic history and offers a visit to its underground cellars alongside a demonstration of outdoor oxidative vinification in demijohns, a technique rooted in Rueda's past that is rarely practised today. A guided tasting follows the cellar tour.
At midday the group travels to the village of Matapozuelos, where guests may choose between a multi-course tasting menu at the one-star Michelin restaurant or the more traditional option of lechazo, the region's celebrated suckling lamb, at a local tavern. Coffee and a sweet course round off the meal.
The afternoon visit opens in the vineyard, where the guide explains the annual vine cycle and the relationship between Rueda's sandy soils, altitude, and cool nights. Back in the winery, a tasting of three wines showcases the cleaner, more modern style of the appellation.
The last stop takes the group into a remarkable 14th-century underground tunnel system beneath the town of Rueda. A local oenologist leads a concluding tasting of DO Rueda wines, placing the day's experiences in a broader regional context.
The vehicle returns the group to the original central Madrid pickup point, arriving in time for the evening paseo. Guests leave with a clear understanding of the Rueda appellation and, if they choose, bottles purchased at the estates.
