Reykjavík Whales and ATV Mountain Safari
Lava fields, mountain peaks, and open ocean — two iconic Icelandic experiences in a single full day.
This full-day tour combines a Reykjavík ATV whale watching combo that takes you from the rugged highlands above the capital straight to the waters of Faxaflói Bay, where humpback whales and dolphins roam freely. It is one of the most varied ways to spend a day in Iceland, pairing land adventure with open-sea exploration.
The morning begins with a quad bike ride through Úlfarsárdalur valley, skirting the shoreline of Lake Hafravatn and climbing to the summit of Hafrafell mountain. From that vantage point the full sweep of Reykjavík and the surrounding volcanic landscape spreads out below you.
After the ATV portion concludes you are transferred directly to the Old Harbour, where there is time to visit the Whale Watching Centre and explore the waterfront before boarding the afternoon departure. The boat crosses Faxaflói Bay, offering views of the Snæfellsnes glacier across the water and regular sightings of minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and harbour porpoises.
Because both activities run back-to-back with organised transfers, there is no need to coordinate separate bookings or arrange private transport between sites. The day ends with a return shuttle to your hotel or a designated stop in central Reykjavík.

How the Day Unfolds
A shuttle bus collects guests from their hotel or a designated stop in Reykjavík and drives them to the Safari Quads base camp in Úlfarsárdalur. Riders receive a safety briefing and are fitted with helmets and protective gear before setting off.
The quad bike route follows the edge of Lake Hafravatn, crossing lava rock, sand, and uneven highland terrain. The route climbs steadily to the summit of Hafrafell mountain, where riders stop to take in the view before descending back to base camp. Total riding time is approximately one hour including brief stops.
After the ATV session ends, the shuttle takes the group to Reykjavík's Old Harbour. There is free time to visit the Whale Watching Centre, browse the harbour area, and grab refreshments before the afternoon boat departure.
The whale watching boat heads out into Faxaflói Bay in search of minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, and porpoises. Knowledgeable guides explain the behaviour of the species encountered and point out seabirds along the way. Views of the Snæfellsnes glacier are often visible on the horizon.
The vessel returns to the Old Harbour at approximately the same time as the advertised end of the tour. Guests board the shuttle bus for the final transfer back to their hotel or the designated stop in the city centre.
