Private Overnight Jebel Shams Camping Tour
Two days across Oman's ancient forts, mountain villages, and the Grand Canyon of Arabia
This private two-day journey takes you deep into the heart of Oman, culminating in an overnight camp at Jebel Shams, the country's highest peak standing at 9,872 feet above the Western Hajar Mountains. The route connects heritage sites, canyon viewpoints, and centuries-old villages in a single continuous experience. Rated easy, the tour is accessible to a wide range of travelers without requiring physical fitness beyond comfortable walking.
The first day traces a path from Muscat through the Dakhiliyah region, pausing at landmarks that reveal the layered history of the Omani interior. Birkat Al Mouz offers a living example of the falaj irrigation system, a UNESCO-recognized network of channels that has sustained agriculture here for generations. Nizwa, the old Omani capital, adds a market scene and a formidable fort to the route before the drive climbs toward Jebel Shams.
Day two centers on the canyon itself, a geological formation carved into dark, barren rock that rewards early morning visitors with dramatic light and sweeping scale. The descent afterward passes through Bahla and Jabrin, two fortresses that together represent distinct chapters of Omani defensive and residential architecture. By late afternoon the tour returns to Muscat, completing a circuit that covers terrain rarely seen on shorter itineraries.

Itinerary
Departing Muscat in the morning, the first stop is Fanja, the gateway city of the Dakhiliyah region and a recognized photo stop for its landscape. The route then continues to Birkat Al Mouz, where a traditional oasis village and its ancient falaj water channels provide an introduction to rural Omani life.
Arriving in Nizwa, the old capital of Oman, guests have time to browse the souk for silver crafts and handmade goods. A visit to Nizwa Fort follows, giving context to the city's strategic importance across centuries of Omani history.
Al Hamra is a 400-year-old town associated with the Al Abri tribe and contains some of the best-preserved traditional mud-brick houses in the country. Misfat Al Abryeen, situated on the slopes above, adds a terraced-village character distinct from the lowland towns visited earlier.
The evening is spent at Jebel Shams, where dinner is provided and guests settle into tent accommodation at altitude. The camp position allows for clear night skies and a head start on the canyon walk the following morning.
After breakfast at camp, guests explore the canyon rim and walking trail before descending approximately 25 km to Bahla Fort, a UNESCO-listed structure representing some of the oldest heritage in the world. Jabrin Fort is the final historical stop before the drive returns to Muscat by late afternoon.
