2-Day Ras Al Hadd Camping Tour with Turtle Watching in Oman
From sinkholes and wadis to sea turtles nesting under the stars
This private two-day journey takes you along Oman's dramatic eastern coastline, combining natural wonders with an overnight camping experience at Ras Al Hadd turtle sanctuary, one of the most rewarding wildlife encounters available in the Arabian Peninsula.
The route from Muscat passes through geological landmarks, canyon wadis, and pristine white-sand beaches before arriving at the turtle reserve, where guided evening walks offer the chance to observe green sea turtles nesting and, depending on the season, hatchlings making their way to the sea.
The second day takes in the historic dhow-building yards of Sur, the ancient ruins of Qalhat, and the lush green corridor of Wadi Tiwi before the return to Muscat, providing a well-rounded picture of Oman's eastern coastal heritage.
Tour Highlights
Swim or photograph the vivid blue-green waters of the Bimah Sinkhole, a striking geological feature on the Omani coast.
Walk the vast expanse of the White Sand Beach at Fins, one of the most scenic stretches of shoreline in eastern Oman.
Hike through Wadi Shab, a canyon gorge filled with palm trees, terraced pools, and a hidden freshwater cave at its far end.
Join a guided night walk at Ras Al Jinz to watch green sea turtles emerge from the Indian Ocean to nest on the beach.
Sleep in a camping tent at Ras Al Hadd under clear desert skies, within reach of Oman's most important turtle reserve.
Visit one of Sur's remaining traditional boatbuilding workshops, where craftsmen still build Omani wooden dhows by hand.
Explore the 14th-century tomb of Bibi Al Battuta and the ancient ruins of Qalhat, a UNESCO-listed heritage site on the return route.
Itinerary
The tour departs Muscat along the scenic coastal road, with an early stop at the Bimah Sinkhole for photography and an optional swim in its turquoise waters. Continuing south, the route reaches the White Sand Beach of Fins, where broad white beaches stretch along a calm bay.
A roughly 35-minute hike into Wadi Shab leads through a palm-lined gorge to a series of emerald-green pools. The trail ends near a hidden cave waterfall, offering a quiet spot to rest before continuing the journey eastward.
After checking into the camping site at Ras Al Hadd and setting up tents, the group transfers to Ras Al Jinz for a guided night walk on the beach. Green sea turtles regularly come ashore here to nest, and there is a seasonal chance of witnessing hatchlings emerging from the sand.
After breakfast at the camp, the tour heads to Sur, a historic coastal town and one of the last places in Oman where traditional wooden dhows are still crafted by hand. A visit to the working boatyard gives a close look at centuries-old shipbuilding techniques.
The route passes through Qalhat, where the tomb of Bibi Al Battuta — a 14th-century monument — stands near the ruins of the ancient city once described by Marco Polo. The site offers a compelling window into Oman's medieval maritime trading history.
The final stop is Wadi Tiwi, a verdant wadi dotted with small villages and large banana plantations, presenting a striking contrast to the coastal scenery encountered the previous day. The tour then returns to Muscat.
