Muscat Afternoon to Evening City Tour: Corniche, Souq and Palace
From the Grand Mosque to the waterfront at golden hour — discover Muscat as the city comes alive at dusk.
This Muscat city tour guides you through the Omani capital during its most photogenic hours, from late afternoon into the evening. The itinerary covers landmark architecture, a living heritage market, and a royal palace flanked by centuries-old Portuguese fortifications.
Muscat rewards visitors who arrive as the heat softens and the light turns golden. The Muttrah Corniche, facing the Gulf of Oman, offers one of the most iconic sunset views in the Arabian Peninsula, and this tour is timed precisely to make the most of it.
The route moves through distinct layers of the city — from the grandeur of a modern mosque to the narrow lanes of a centuries-old souq — giving a well-rounded sense of how Muscat balances its past and its present. The difficulty level is easy, making this accessible for most travellers.

Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at one of the largest mosques in the world. The main prayer hall contains the second-largest handmade carpet in the world and a celebrated chandelier. Note that the mosque is open Saturday to Thursday from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. and closed on Fridays; this stop is a photo stop from outside only during the afternoon tour.
A short drive brings you to this newer mosque set slightly above the city with the Hajar Mountains providing a dramatic backdrop. The elevated position offers sweeping city views that are well suited for photography.
Located in the Shatti Al-Qurm district on Sultan Qaboos Street, the Royal Opera House is Oman's principal venue for the performing arts. Depending on the schedule, guests may enter the building or take photos from outside.
The route follows the scenic Shatti Qurum beach road before reaching the Muttrah Corniche. A walk along the waterfront leads directly to Muttrah Souq, where winding alleyways are lined with stalls selling antiques, frankincense, silverware, and local souvenirs.
The final stop is Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial residence of His Majesty the Sultan of Oman, situated in the heart of Old Muscat. The palace is framed by the 16th-century Portuguese fortifications of Fort Mirani and Fort Jalali. The tour concludes here, with drop-off available anywhere in Muscat on request.
