Private Day Hike to Helgafell: Lava Caves and Elves
Walk an ancient volcanic mountain steeped in Icelandic folklore, just 30 minutes from Reykjavik.
The Helgafell day hike leads you across a flat-topped tuya formed beneath a prehistoric ice sheet, offering sweeping panoramic views of Reykjavik and the Reykjanes Peninsula while immersing you in centuries of Icelandic legend. The route covers 8 km with 290 m of elevation gain, rated easy to moderate, and suits both first-time visitors and seasoned walkers. An expert mountain leader accompanies every step, weaving geology, history, and mythology into the journey.
Helgafell, meaning the holy mountain, has long been tied to Icelandic beliefs about elves and the hidden people said to dwell within its rocks. The landscape carries a quietness that feels deliberate, as though the mountain itself is listening. Walking here is less a physical challenge and more a slow conversation with the land.
Beyond the open ridges and windswept valleys, the route reaches a series of lava caves carved by ancient volcanic activity. These subterranean chambers reveal the raw geological forces that continue to shape Iceland from below. The contrast between the wide sky above and the close darkness of the caves makes for one of the more striking moments of the day.
Wildlife along the trail includes nesting birds and seasonal wildflowers, with the occasional Arctic fox spotted at a distance. The guide keeps the pace unhurried, allowing time to observe and absorb rather than simply move through. This approach turns a hike into a genuine encounter with the Icelandic wilderness.

How the Day Unfolds
Your guide collects the group from the designated meeting point in Reykjavik. The drive to the Helgafell trailhead takes approximately 30 minutes, during which the guide introduces the mountain's geological background and cultural significance.
At the trailhead the guide reviews the route, safety points, and what to expect underfoot. The ascent begins on a secluded path that avoids the more frequented tourist tracks, heading toward Helgafell's distinctive flat summit.
Reaching the top reveals an unobstructed view across Reykjavik, the peninsula coastline, and on clear days, distant volcanic peaks. The guide discusses how this tuya formed beneath an ice sheet and why it holds such a prominent place in Icelandic tradition.
The route descends toward nearby lava caves, where the group enters the volcanic underworld at a careful pace. Inside, the guide explains how the tubes were created by flowing lava and points out the textures and formations unique to each chamber.
The return leg passes through valleys and open moorland where birdlife is most active. This section is unhurried, leaving room to observe the landscape and for the guide to address questions about folklore, ecology, or geology.
The group returns to the vehicle for the short drive back to Reykjavik, arriving at the drop-off point by mid-afternoon. Total active hiking time is approximately 5 hours excluding travel.
