Tour Itinerary
Your guide collects you directly from your accommodation within the Reykjavik Capital Area. The drive out of the city passes through traditional Icelandic farmland, setting the scene for what lies ahead.
Iceland's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the North American and Eurasian plates diverge. The visit includes Hakið viewpoint overlooking Thingvallavatn, Iceland's largest natural lake, and a walk through Almannagjá rift to see Öxarárfoss, the man-made Viking waterfall. The park also served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
The Haukadalur valley hosts Iceland's most active geothermal field, featuring colorful hot springs, mud pools, and Strokkur, the only currently spouting geyser in Europe. Blesi and Konungshver are among the other notable springs in the area, and a short hike up Laugarfell provides a full overview of the geothermal field. The original Geysir, which gave all geysers their name, remains dormant but is still a significant landmark.
The final stop is Gullfoss, one of Iceland's most visited natural sites, where the glacial Hvítá river drops 32 meters into a narrow basalt gorge. A walking trail leads up to both the 21-meter lower cascade and the 11-meter upper cascade, and a memorial sculpture honors Sigríður Tómasdóttir, whose activism in the early 20th century saved Gullfoss from industrial exploitation. The waterfall became a permanent nature reserve in 1979 and is now state-owned.
