Private Golden Circle, Laugarvatn Fontana & Geothermal Bakery
Walk between tectonic plates, taste bread baked underground, and soak in geothermal waters on Iceland's most storied route.
The Private Golden Circle tour brings together three of Iceland's most celebrated natural landmarks with two deeply local experiences — a geothermal bakery and a mineral-rich spa — all within a single, unhurried nine-hour journey.
Thingvellir National Park sets the tone for the day. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the world's oldest parliament, it offers a rare convergence of geological drama and Viking-age history in one walkable landscape.
From the spouting waters of Strokkur at the Geysir geothermal area to the double cascades of Gullfoss tumbling 32 meters into a basalt gorge, the route delivers raw Icelandic scenery at every turn. The private format means the pace is yours to set.
What distinguishes this itinerary is what lies between the landmarks. Watching freshly baked rye bread lifted from hot black sand and then easing into the warm outdoor pools at Laugarvatn Fontana transforms a sightseeing circuit into something genuinely immersive.
Tour Highlights
Walk along the Almannagjá rift at Thingvellir, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart by several millimeters each year.
Watch Strokkur erupt every five to eight minutes, sending scalding geothermal water up to 30 meters into the Icelandic sky.
Stand at the edge of Gullfoss and feel the mist from two cascading tiers of glacial water plunging into the Gullfossgljúfur gorge.
Witness rye bread dug directly from the hot black sand at the Geothermal Bakery and taste it still warm, served with Icelandic butter and smoked trout.
Relax in the mineral-rich outdoor pools and natural steam rooms at Laugarvatn Fontana, situated on the shores of Lake Laugarvatn.
Explore the site of Alþingi, the Viking-age parliament founded in AD 930 and the oldest representative assembly in the world.
Travel as a private group, giving you flexibility at each stop and undivided attention from your guide throughout the day.
Itinerary
The first national park in Iceland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thingvellir sits within a rift valley formed by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. You can walk along the Almannagjá rift, tracing the eastern edge of the North American plate, and visit the site where Iceland's Alþingi parliament convened from AD 930 until 1798. Christianity was adopted here in AD 1000, and the Republic of Iceland was proclaimed on this ground in 1944.
Perched on the shore of Lake Laugarvatn, Fontana has been drawing visitors to its natural steam rooms and mineral pools since 1929. The steam rooms sit directly above bubbling hot springs, reaching temperatures between 40°C and 50°C, while the outdoor pools — Lauga, Sæla, and Viska — vary in depth and heat. A Finnish-style sauna, Ylur, overlooks the lake, and cold-water lake bathing is available for those seeking contrast therapy.
A short walk leads to the lakeshore, where rye bread has been slow-cooking in geothermal black sand for 24 hours. The demonstration lasts 30 to 40 minutes and includes the full digging-out process. You are invited to eat as much of the dense, slightly sweet bread as you like, paired with Icelandic butter and a slice of smoked trout.
The Haukadalur valley hosts one of Europe's most active geothermal fields. Strokkur, the only currently active geyser in the area, erupts reliably every five to eight minutes. The original Geysir — the spring that gave the world the word geyser — is dormant but remains a compelling landmark alongside vivid blue hot springs such as Blesi and the large, ornate Konungshver.
Gullfoss channels the glacial Hvítá River — fed by the Langjökull glacier — over two cascades into a 2.5-kilometer basalt gorge. The lower drop is 21 meters, the upper 11 meters. A walking trail approaches both tiers closely, and on clear days rainbows form in the spray. A memorial near the path honors Sigríður Tómasdóttir, whose protest campaign in the early 20th century prevented the waterfall from being converted into a hydroelectric plant.
