Expedition in Fagaras Mountains from Brasov Private Tour

Six days along the highest ridge in the Carpathians, from Moldoveanu to Negoiu, under open skies and above the clouds.

A Fagaras Mountains hiking expedition is one of the most demanding and rewarding multi-day treks in Romania, traversing a crest that holds eight of the fourteen Carpathian peaks above 2,500 metres. This private tour departs from Brasov and guides you across glacial lakes, sharp ridgelines, and summits that define the backbone of the Southern Carpathians. Every stage is led by an experienced local guide who adapts the route to your group's pace and conditions.

The Fagaras range takes its name from an old Romanian word for a large beech forest, a reminder that this landscape has been shaped over centuries by both nature and human memory. At its base, the oak grove of Dumbrava Vadului still shelters a rare colony of daffodils known locally as coprine, while above the tree line the terrain opens into a world of granite, wind, and wide horizons.

The highest glacial lake in the entire Carpathian chain, Lake Mioarelor at 2,282 metres, sits within this range, and the trek passes several other glacial tarns including Iezerul Podul Giurgiului, Capra, Caltun, and Avrig. The route also brings you within sight of the Transfagarasan Highway, described variously as the Road to the Sky and the Best Driving Road in the World, offering a striking contrast between engineered infrastructure and raw alpine terrain.

Because this is a private tour, the itinerary can be discussed and adjusted before departure. The guide makes final decisions on exposed sections such as Custura Saratii, which is recommended only for experienced hikers, and may substitute a safer alternative without compromising the overall journey.

Tour Highlights

Stand on Moldoveanu Peak at 2,544 metres, the highest point in Romania and in the entire Carpathian chain.

Camp beside remote glacial lakes including Caltun and Avrig, set in dramatic cirques carved by ancient glaciers.

Walk the sharpest high ridge in the country, the section between Vistea Mare and Moldoveanu, with exposure on both sides.

Panoramic views from Negoiu Peak at 2,535 metres, the second highest summit in Romania, looking across the Southern Carpathians in all directions.

Visit the Nerlinger Memorial at 2,287 metres, a historical marker dating from 1934 placed in memory of two mountaineers lost on this ridge.

Begin the trek through the Sambata Valley, passing from beech forest and the historic Sambata de Sus monastery area up to the high alpine zone.

Travel as a private group with a dedicated guide who monitors conditions and makes safety decisions on exposed ridgeline sections.

Itinerary Overview

1
Brasov to Fereastra Mica a Sambetei (Camp 1)

Transfer from Brasov to the Sambata de Sus area with a stop to purchase food supplies.
