Tour Highlights
Walk through the ancient Laurisilva of Madeira, a UNESCO World Heritage laurel forest that has persisted for 15 to 40 million years and represents a rare relict ecosystem from Southern Europe's prehistoric past.
Cross the Paul da Serra plateau, Madeira's largest highland plain at approximately 24 square kilometres and an average altitude of 1,500 metres, with panoramic views across the entire plateau from Pico do Paul.
Witness the dramatic roadside waterfall cascading down the rockface onto the old ER-101 regional road before spilling directly into the sea — one of the most photographed natural spectacles on the island.
Visit Porto Moniz's natural volcanic pools, world-renowned for their crystal-clear water quality and exceptional coastal infrastructure, attracting visitors from across Europe and beyond.
Stand at Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs, and look down over the terraced vineyards and the deep blue Atlantic from a vantage point that few other destinations can match.
Explore Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela on the north coast, where extraordinary basalt rock formations rise from the ocean just metres from shore, 45 kilometres from Funchal.
Travel through Ribeira Brava, a historic municipality named after its powerful river, and continue along the north coast to Seixal Beach, a natural black sand beach framed by green cliffs and volcanic mountains.
Itinerary
The tour begins with pick-up at the cruise terminal in Funchal. The first significant stop is Cabo Girão, one of Europe's tallest sea cliffs, where a glass-floored skywalk extends over the cliff edge above the Atlantic coast below.
The route passes through Ribeira Brava, the town named after its powerful seasonal river. Shortly after, the famous roadside waterfall comes into view, cascading directly from the rockface onto the old ER-101 highway and into the sea.
The vehicle climbs to the Paul da Serra plateau, Madeira's vast highland plain at around 1,500 metres altitude. From Pico do Paul at 1,640 metres, the full extent of the plateau becomes visible before the route enters the UNESCO Laurisilva laurel forest.
Descending to the north coast, the route follows the Ribeira da Janela ravine from its plateau source down to the shore. At the coast, the dramatic Ilheus da Ribeira da Janela basalt stacks stand just offshore, offering a striking photographic subject.
Porto Moniz, first settled in the late 15th century, is home to natural volcanic rock pools praised for their water quality and facilities. Nearby, Porto do Seixal Beach offers black sand, sea access, and views of the island's dramatic northern cliffs.
The excursion concludes with a return transfer to the cruise terminal in Funchal. The full route covers the western arc of Madeira, returning guests well within the vessel's scheduled departure window.
