2-Day Escape: South Coast & Diamond Beach
Two days to let Iceland's glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand coastline unfold at your own pace.
This private 2-day Iceland South Coast tour is designed for travelers who want to experience the country's most iconic landscapes without the pressure of a single long driving day. Departing from Reykjavík, the journey covers waterfalls, volcanic beaches, glacier lagoons, and canyons across a relaxed two-day itinerary.
On day one, the route follows the South Coast road east, passing through farmland that gradually gives way to glacial ridges and volcanic terrain. Stops at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss offer two distinct waterfall experiences, while Reynisfjara black sand beach and the Dyrhólaey promontory provide dramatic coastal perspectives.
The second day shifts focus to Iceland's glacial interior, centering on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach. Icebergs calved from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier drift across the lagoon before washing ashore on the black sand beach as glittering ice fragments. The canyon of Fjaðrárgljúfur offers a final stop before the return to Reykjavík.
Because this is a private excursion, the pace is adjusted to suit your group. There is time to linger at each location rather than move through a fixed schedule, making it well suited to photographers, families, and first-time visitors to Iceland who want meaningful time at each site.
Tour Highlights
Walk behind the curtain of water at Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland's most distinctive waterfall experiences.
Stand on the black volcanic sands of Reynisfjara, framed by towering basalt columns and Atlantic surf.
Explore Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift slowly from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier into open water.
Visit Diamond Beach, where ice blocks from the lagoon rest on black sand and catch the light like glass.
View the South Coast from Dyrhólaey, a natural stone arch promontory with panoramic views of the coastline.
Walk the rim of Fjaðrárgljúfur, a deep glacially carved canyon with a winding river far below.
Travel at a private pace with no fixed group schedule, allowing more time at the sites that matter most to you.
Itinerary
The route departs Reykjavík and heads east along the South Coast. Seljalandsfoss allows you to walk the path behind the waterfall for an unusual vantage point. A short drive further, Skógafoss drops 60 meters and frequently produces rainbows in its mist on clear days.
The promontory at Dyrhólaey offers wide views over the South Coast shoreline and its natural stone arch, weather permitting. Below, Reynisfjara black sand beach is bordered by hexagonal basalt columns and shaped by powerful Atlantic waves.
The first day concludes with an overnight stay near Vík or further east, positioning the group close to the glacial sites for day two. The slower pace of this itinerary means no early-morning rush back from a long single-day drive.
Day two begins at the glacier lagoon, where icebergs calved from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier drift across blue water. Directly across the road, Diamond Beach presents ice fragments washed ashore on black volcanic sand. Optional boat tours on the lagoon are available locally but not included.
If conditions allow, the journey continues to Fjaðrárgljúfur, a steep and winding canyon formed over thousands of years by glacial meltwater. The group then travels west toward Reykjavík with optional stops available along the return route.
