Istanbul and Ephesus: A 5-Day Private and Small Group Journey Through Time
Two continents, three millennia of history, and one unforgettable guided adventure across Turkey's most iconic destinations.
This Istanbul and Ephesus guided tour takes small groups of no more than ten guests through the layered history of two of the ancient world's most significant cities. From the domes and minarets of the Ottoman capital to the marble colonnades of a once-mighty Roman port, each day is structured to deliver depth without rush. Domestic flights between Istanbul and Izmir are included, keeping travel efficient and comfortable.
Istanbul occupies a singular position in world history, having served as the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires across nearly 1,600 years. Over two full days, guests walk through the Hippodrome, enter Hagia Sophia, explore Topkapi Palace, and drift through the covered lanes of the Grand Bazaar and the aromatic corridors of the Spice Bazaar. A Bosphorus boat excursion and a visit to the subterranean Basilica Cistern complete the city experience.
The day trip to Ephesus adds a third dimension to the journey. The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, sets the tone before guests enter the ancient city itself, passing the Celsus Library, the Temple of Hadrian, the Grand Theatre, and the terraced streets that once carried Roman foot traffic. The House of the Virgin Mary, set in the hills above Ephesus, provides a moment of quiet reflection at a site of profound religious significance.
Throughout the tour, a professional guide accompanies the group, transport is provided by minibus, and accommodation is arranged in boutique or four-star hotels in Istanbul's historic old town. The small group format means itineraries remain flexible and personal attention is consistently available.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Guests are met on arrival at either Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gokcen Airport (SAW) by a representative holding a name sign. A private transfer delivers the group to the hotel in Istanbul's historic old town for check-in and overnight rest.
The guided day begins at the Hippodrome before proceeding to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, where collections include the imperial treasury and weapons section. The afternoon is spent in the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's oldest covered markets with over 1,200 shops across 58 covered streets. Note: the Grand Bazaar is closed on Sundays; if Day 2 falls on a Sunday, this visit is rescheduled to Day 3.
The morning opens at the Spice Bazaar before the group boards a boat for a Bosphorus cruise along the waterway dividing Europe and Asia. The afternoon descends into the Basilica Cistern, a sixth-century underground reservoir supported by hundreds of marble columns, built by Emperor Justinian I beneath the city streets.
An early transfer to Istanbul Airport is followed by a domestic flight to Izmir. The day covers the Temple of Artemis, the full archaeological site of Ephesus, a lunch break at a local handicrafts centre where traditional carpet weaving is demonstrated, and a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary. An evening flight returns the group to Istanbul for overnight stay.
After breakfast, guests check out and are transferred by private vehicle to either Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gokcen Airport for their onward journey. The tour concludes at the airport.
