Private Ephesus Tour with House of Virgin Mary and Temple of Artemis
Walk the marble streets of antiquity, visit a sacred pilgrimage site, and trace the footsteps of emperors and apostles in a single day.
This Ephesus tour from Kusadasi brings together three of western Turkey's most significant heritage sites — ancient Ephesus, the House of Virgin Mary, and the Temple of Artemis — in a single, well-paced private or small-group excursion with no hidden costs and all entrance fees included.
Designed for cruise passengers docking at Kusadasi as well as hotel-based visitors, the tour operates with a maximum of 10 participants, ensuring an attentive, unhurried experience. A licensed guide meets you at the port or your hotel lobby with a name sign at the pre-arranged time, and air-conditioned transport is provided throughout.
The itinerary covers the House of Virgin Mary first, followed by a comprehensive walk through the ancient city of Ephesus, with an optional visit to the Terrace Houses available in select booking options. The final stop is the Temple of Artemis, once counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, before the return drive to Kusadasi port and town center.
Tour Highlights
Explore the Library of Celsus, the Grand Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian, and the Baths of Scholastica along Ephesus's ancient marble-paved streets.
Visit the House of Virgin Mary on the Aladag Mountains, a recognized Catholic pilgrimage site visited by Pope Paul VI in 1967.
See the surviving column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as the tour's final archaeological stop.
Optional Terrace Houses visit — six lavishly decorated residential units from ancient Ephesus featuring original wall frescoes and floor mosaics (available in select options).
All entrance fees are included in the tour price, with no hidden costs added at the site — a detail that sets this excursion apart from many competing offers.
A professionally licensed, English-speaking guide accompanies the group throughout, providing historical context and managing site access efficiently.
Itinerary
Your guide meets you at Kusadasi Port or a listed hotel lobby with a name sign. Cruise guests are typically collected 30 to 45 minutes after ship arrival, and the drive to the Ephesus area takes approximately 20 minutes.
The tour begins at the House of Virgin Mary, situated in the Aladag Mountains about 5 miles from Ephesus. According to tradition established at the Third Ecumenical Council in 431 AD, Mary came to Ephesus with St. John around 37 AD and lived here until her death. The Archbishop of Izmir declared the site a place of pilgrimage in 1892.
A detailed guided walk through the ancient city takes in the Library of Celsus (built in the early 2nd century AD as a memorial to proconsul Gaius Julius Celsus Polemanus), the Temple of Hadrian, the Baths of Scholastica, and the Grand Theatre, which originally dates to the 3rd century BC and was expanded by the Romans to seat 24,000 spectators.
Available exclusively in the Private with Terrace Houses and Small Group with Terrace Houses booking options, the Terrace Houses consist of six residential units built across three man-made terraces on the slope of Pion Mountain. The dwellings were home to wealthy Ephesian citizens and retain elaborate frescoes and mosaic floors. Note: not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or a fear of heights.
The final archaeological stop is the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, where a single reconstructed column marks the scale of the original structure. This brief but significant visit precedes the return drive to Kusadasi.
The group is driven back to Kusadasi through Gazi Begendi Park, with drop-off at the cruise terminal and town center. Time remaining before ship departure can be used for independent shopping in the town.
