Rafting the Lousios and Alfeios Rivers in Arcadia
Two legendary rivers, one unforgettable journey through the gorges of ancient Arcadia
This Lousios and Alfeios river rafting experience takes you through one of the most scenically striking and mythologically rich corridors in all of Greece, where white limestone cliffs tower above crystal-clear waters fed by centuries of natural history. Suitable for beginners and families alike, this four-hour guided trip blends gentle rapids with breathtaking gorge scenery that few visitors ever reach by land.
The Lousios River holds a rare place in Greek mythology as the site where Zeus was said to have bathed after his birth, while the Alfeios — the longest river in the Peloponnese — was itself venerated as a deity in antiquity. Together they carve through a deep gorge lined with dense riparian vegetation that remains lush even during the peak of summer.
Along the canyon walls, visitors can observe remnants of old watermills that once harnessed the rivers' force, as well as cave hermitages and cliff-side monasteries, one of which remains inhabited by monks to this day. The combination of natural spectacle and layered human history makes this corridor unlike any other rafting destination in the country.
The trip departs from the bridge of Atsicholos, where your certified river guide will conduct a short safety briefing and fitting session for all equipment. Once on the water, the pace is relaxed enough to appreciate your surroundings while still offering moments of genuine paddling challenge at rapids rated level 2 to 3 on the international scale.

How the Trip Unfolds
Meet your river guide at the bridge of Atsicholos in Arcadia. Wetsuits, lifejackets, helmets and paddles are distributed and fitted to each participant.
Your guide conducts a brief on-shore training session covering paddling technique, river commands and safety procedures. No previous experience is required to follow along.
The group enters the water and begins navigating the Lousios through its celebrated gorge. Early sections are calm, allowing participants to find their rhythm and take in the towering limestone walls.
As the trip progresses, the group encounters rapids rated between level 2 and 3. Guides identify safe pools where participants can jump in and swim in the crystal-clear current.
The Lousios meets the Alfeios, the longest river in the Peloponnese. The character of the water changes here, and the gorge scenery continues to impress with cliff monasteries visible above.
The rafting route concludes at the designated end point. Equipment is collected and returned, and the group is transferred back to the starting location.
