Private Nemean Wine Tour, Ancient Nemea & Mycenae from Athens
Mythology, ancient ruins, and world-class wine in one unforgettable private journey through the Peloponnese.
This private Nemea wine tour from Athens brings together two of the Peloponnese's most rewarding destinations: the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae and the vine-covered hills of ancient Nemea. Spanning eight hours, the experience moves seamlessly between archaeological wonder and wine culture. It is designed for travelers who want depth, privacy, and flavor in equal measure.
Mycenae alone justifies the journey. The Lion's Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, and the Treasury of Atreus are among the most compelling ancient structures surviving in Greece. Their scale and preservation make it easy to understand why Heinrich Schliemann described Mycenae as a city rich in gold.
Nemea adds a different dimension. The landscape shifts into rolling hills planted with Agiorgitiko vines, and the atmosphere changes from archaeological intensity to the unhurried pace of wine country. A village-style lunch on a terrace overlooking ancient Corinth and the Temple of Apollo completes the arc of the day.
Tour Highlights
Walk through the Lion's Gate and explore the royal tombs of Mycenae, including the Treasury of Atreus built around 1250 BC.
Taste wines at celebrated Nemea estates including Gaia Winery, Palivou Estate, and Papaioannou Estate.
Enter the ancient Nemea stadium through its 36-metre underground tunnel, a passage that has connected athletes across millennia.
Enjoy an authentic village-style lunch on a terrace with views over the archaeological site of ancient Corinth and the Temple of Apollo.
Visit two archaeological museums: the Mycenean Museum with its gold burial masks, and the Nemea Museum founded by the University of California.
Experience the entire day as a private tour, with no shared coaches, no fixed group schedules, and a guide dedicated entirely to your party.
Itinerary
Your private vehicle departs from Athens heading southwest into the Peloponnese. The drive to Mycenae takes roughly ninety minutes through the Argolid plain.
Explore the Lion's Gate, Grave Circles A and B, the Cyclopean Walls, the Royal Palace, and the Tomb of Clytemnestra. The Treasury of Atreus, a massive tholos tomb constructed around 1250 BC, is a separate monument just below the citadel and not to be missed.
The on-site museum holds gold burial masks, jewellery, weapons, worship idols, and painted frescoes recovered from the citadel and surrounding tombs. It provides essential context for what you have just seen above ground.
Three standing columns of the Temple of Zeus mark the sanctuary where the Nemean Games were held. The ancient stadium is entered through a vaulted tunnel over 36 metres long, and the adjacent museum traces both the athletic history of the site and the archaeology of the region.
Visit selected wineries from among Palivou Estate, Lafazanis Winery, Gaia Winery, Lafkioti Winery, Papaioannou Estate, and Themeli Winery. Each estate offers an opportunity to taste award-winning Agiorgitiko alongside a guided introduction to Nemea's wine culture.
Lunch is served at a local taverna with a terrace overlooking the ancient Corinth archaeological site and the columns of the Temple of Apollo. After the meal, the private vehicle returns you to Athens.
