Gorropu Canyon Hike from Cala Gonone with Transfer and Lunch
Step into the depths of Italy's most spectacular gorge on a guided trek through the heart of eastern Sardinia.
This guided excursion leads you deep into the Gorropu Canyon, widely regarded as the deepest canyon in Italy and among the most impressive in Europe, departing directly from Cala Gonone with off-road transfer included.
An off-road vehicle carries you from Cala Gonone to the trailhead near Dorgali, where a well-marked path winds through the lush Mediterranean scrub along the ancient riverbed that carved this extraordinary gorge over millennia. As the walls rise around you, the scale of the landscape becomes genuinely humbling.
Inside the canyon, the terrain shifts from a beaten track to raw rock and scree, demanding careful footing as you advance deeper between limestone walls that tower overhead. The white boulders, polished smooth by centuries of water and wind, give the gorge floor a striking, almost lunar quality.
Before heading back, the group pauses for a traditional Sardinian lunch spread out in full view of the canyon walls, featuring local cold cuts, cheese, carasau bread, fruit, and typical desserts accompanied by water and wine. It is a fitting reward after four hours on foot in one of the island's most remote corners.

Itinerary
The excursion begins at the meeting point in Cala Gonone, where the group boards a 4x4 off-road vehicle for the transfer toward Dorgali. The ride crosses the rugged inland terrain of eastern Sardinia before reaching the canyon trailhead.
From the trailhead, the hike follows the ancient riverbed through typical Mediterranean vegetation, with the path clearly marked and straightforward underfoot. The surrounding scrubland is rich in native plants and the air carries the scent of wild herbs.
As the trail narrows, the canyon walls begin to close in and the dramatic scale of the gorge becomes apparent. The footing transitions to rock and scree, requiring attention and care as the group moves deeper inside.
Inside the gorge, the group takes time to observe the massive limestone boulders and vertical rock faces that define this geological wonder. The guide provides context about the canyon's formation and the natural history of the area.
Before the return trek, the group settles for a generous lunch of local products including cold cuts, cheese, carasau and moddizzosu bread, vegetables, fruit, dessert, water, and wine. Guests with dietary requirements should notify the operator in advance.
The group retraces the path back to the trailhead and boards the vehicle for the return transfer to Cala Gonone. Total trekking time is approximately four hours over a 12-kilometre round route.
