Itinerary
After approximately one hour of comfortable driving from Reykjavik, you arrive at Þingvellir — a UNESCO World Heritage Site set in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates are visibly drifting apart. This is also the location of Iceland's Althing, one of the world's oldest parliaments, founded in 930 AD. The visitor center offers an interactive exhibition covering the park's geological and historical significance.
Roughly 45 minutes from Þingvellir, the Geysir Geothermal Area is home to an array of bubbling hot springs, steam vents, and colorful mineral formations. The star of the area is Strokkur, which erupts reliably every few minutes to heights of up to 30 meters — predictable enough that visitors can anticipate each burst by watching the pre-eruption pool swell. A visitor center and restaurants are available on site.
A ten-minute drive from Geysir brings you to Gullfoss, a dramatic two-tiered waterfall that descends approximately 32 meters into a canyon carved by glacial meltwater from the Langjökull glacier. The turquoise hue of the water comes from suspended glacial sediment, and on clear days the rising mist creates a natural rainbow. Hiking trails along the rim offer panoramic views of both the falls and the surrounding countryside.
Located in Reykholt, Friðheimar is a working greenhouse farm that uses geothermal energy to grow tomatoes year-round. Visitors can enjoy a tomato-focused lunch directly among the plants in a relaxed and informal setting. This optional stop must be booked separately by contacting the operator in advance.
The Secret Lagoon — known locally as Gamla Laugin — is one of Iceland's oldest geothermal bathing pools, tucked away near the village of Flúðir. The pool sits within a naturally steaming landscape and offers a quieter alternative to more commercial hot spring facilities. Like the farm lunch, this experience is optional and charged separately upon request.
