Kleifarvatn is the third largest lake in southern Iceland and among the country's deepest. Geothermal heat is measurable in the lake's southern section, and local legend holds that a large worm-like creature — black and roughly the size of a whale — has been spotted here over the years.
Seltún is one of the most visually striking geothermal areas in Iceland, featuring active mud pots, steaming fumaroles, and hillsides layered with colorful mineral deposits. The acidity of the water, driven by carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide gases, slowly breaks down the surrounding lava rock into clay.
