Zurich Guided Hiking Day Trip on Leistkamm Ridge
A full-day traverse above Lake Walensee through the heart of the Glarus Alps
This Leistkamm Ridge guided hike takes you along one of the Eastern Swiss Alps' most rewarding ridgelines, combining sweeping panoramas with the knowledge of an experienced local guide who brings the landscape to life.
Departing Zurich by scenic train and bus, the route reaches the village of Amden before ascending to Arvenbüel and the open ridge above Lake Walensee. The trail covers 12 to 14 kilometres with around 1,000 metres of elevation gain, placing it firmly in the moderate category for walkers with reasonable fitness.
Throughout the hike, your guide shares insights into the alpine flora, local farming traditions, and the geology that shaped the dramatic Churfirsten towers visible across the valley. These quieter trails offer a contrast to the busier routes found closer to popular Swiss resorts.
Round-trip transport from Zurich is included, removing any logistical complexity and allowing you to focus entirely on the scenery and the walk itself. The day concludes with a return journey that offers further views of the Swiss countryside as daylight fades.

Itinerary
The day begins in Zurich, Switzerland's cultural and financial centre, where medieval architecture and modern amenities coexist along the banks of the Limmat River. The group departs by train through the Swiss countryside toward the foothills of the Eastern Alps.
Situated above Lake Walensee, the village of Amden serves as the trailhead for the day's ascent. Narrow lanes, traditional farmhouses, and unobstructed views across the valley set the tone before the hike begins in earnest.
The trail climbs through pastures and mixed forest to reach Arvenbüel, a small alpine settlement offering the first sweeping views toward the Churfirsten range and the shimmering surface of Lake Walensee far below.
The centrepiece of the day is the walk along Leistkamm Ridge itself, where open terrain provides uninterrupted panoramas of the Glarus Alps and Churfirsten peaks. Your guide explains the local flora and geological story of the landscape throughout this section.
The descent brings Lake Walensee into full view, its deep-blue waters enclosed by near-vertical limestone walls. The lake's dramatic setting has made it a reference point for Swiss alpine photography and landscape painting for centuries.
The group reboards regional transport for the scenic return journey to Zurich, arriving in the city after approximately 10 hours away. No additional navigation or logistics are required from participants at any point during the return.
