Itinerary Overview
The quest begins at Dickens's only surviving London residence, a Georgian terraced house in Holborn where he lived from 1837 to 1839. It was here that he completed The Pickwick Papers, wrote Oliver Twist, and started Nicholas Nickleby.
This area of Clerkenwell is the fictional territory of Fagin's gang in Oliver Twist. The pub here, dating to 1759, was renamed the Three Cripples by Dickens and served as Bill Sikes's preferred drinking den in the novel.
One of the oldest surviving timber-framed buildings in London, Staple Inn dates to 1585 and once served as the wool staple, where wool was weighed and taxed. It survived the Great Fire but was damaged in a 1944 Luftwaffe bombing before being restored.
Samuel Johnson, one of the most distinguished figures in English literary history, rented this house from 1748 to 1759. It was here that he compiled his landmark Dictionary of the English Language.
Originally established in the 1530s and rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666, this ancient tavern was a favoured haunt of Dickens and other Victorian writers. Its sawdust-covered floors and low ceilings remain largely as they were centuries ago.
This church on Fleet Street now shares its building with the Romanian Orthodox community, housing an iconostasis originally from Antim Monastery in Bucharest. It stands as one of Fleet Street's most historically layered buildings.
