Green Tour Cappadocia: Underground Cities, Ihlara Valley & Selime Monastery
A single day that covers the geological wonders, ancient monasteries, and subterranean cities of one of Turkey's most captivating regions.
The Cappadocia Green Tour is the most comprehensive single-day route through the region's southern highlights, combining underground architecture, river canyon hiking, and rock-cut religious heritage into one accessible itinerary. Designed for small groups, the tour keeps pace manageable while ensuring each site receives the time and context it deserves. From panoramic viewpoints to centuries-old cave cathedrals, every stop delivers a distinct layer of Cappadocia's layered history.
Cappadocia's landscape is the product of millions of years of volcanic activity and erosion, and nowhere is this more apparent than from the Göreme panoramic viewpoint that opens the day. Your guide sets the historical stage here, outlining how successive civilisations adapted this unusual terrain for shelter, worship, and community life across more than two thousand years.
The route then moves underground at Kaymakli before returning to the surface for a riverside walk through Ihlara Valley, lunch in the village of Belisirma, and a final ascent to Selime Monastery. The return journey pauses at Pigeon Valley, offering one more sweeping view before the group returns to its hotels.

Itinerary
The tour begins with hotel pickup from Göreme, Avanos, Uçhisar, or Urgup. The first stop is the panoramic viewpoint above Göreme, where your guide introduces the geology and human history of Cappadocia against the backdrop of its extraordinary rock formations.
The group descends into Kaymakli, an expansive multi-level underground city carved by early inhabitants for protection. Stables, wine cellars, churches, living quarters, and ventilation shafts all remain visible, giving a vivid picture of subterranean daily life.
Driving south, the tour reaches the Ihlara gorge for an approximately one-hour walk along the Melendiz River. The valley is notably green year-round, with ancient rock-cut churches dotting the cliff faces above the river path.
The walk concludes at Belisirma, a small village inside the gorge where lunch is served at a restaurant positioned directly on the riverbank. This is an included stop and a natural rest point midway through the day.
After lunch, the group visits Selime Monastery, the largest rock-cut religious complex in the region. The site includes a sizeable cave cathedral and offers panoramic views over the surrounding valley and volcanic landscape.
On the return journey to Göreme, the tour stops at the Pigeon Valley vista point for a final look at Cappadocia's fairy chimney landscape before hotel drop-off concludes the day.
