Gobeklitepe & Sanliurfa Tour from Istanbul – 2 Days
Walk through the cradle of civilization and discover the sacred roots of human history in southeastern Turkey.
This 2-day private journey from Istanbul places you at the heart of humanity's oldest known religious sites, with the Gobeklitepe and Sanliurfa tour serving as your gateway to a world that predates written history by thousands of years. All logistics — flights, transfers, accommodation and guiding — are handled on your behalf. You arrive, and the story unfolds.
Sanliurfa, historically known as Edessa, has been continuously inhabited since at least 10,000 BC and sits at the crossroads of Mesopotamian, Assyrian, Greek, Roman and Islamic civilizations. The city carries a rare cultural density, visible in everything from its archaeological museum to its centuries-old covered bazaar and the sacred fish pools of Ainzelha.
Beyond the city, the landscape opens onto sites that are redefining our understanding of prehistoric human society. Gobeklitepe, Karahantepe and Harran form a triangle of discovery that no serious traveler interested in ancient history should bypass. The region known as Tas Tepeler is still being excavated, meaning what you see today is part of an ongoing revelation.
The tour is rated easy and suits a wide range of travelers. Distances between sites are covered by private vehicle, and the pace is designed to be comfortable while remaining substantive in content.
Tour Highlights

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Hotel pickup in Istanbul is followed by a flight to Sanliurfa, where your private guide and vehicle are waiting at the airport. After a light breakfast, the day begins with a visit to the Urfa Archaeological Museum, which holds artifacts from Harran and the Gobeklitepe region.
The afternoon takes in the Urfa Castle — believed to have origins as far back as 10,000 BC — the Cave of the Prophet Abraham, the Ainzelha fish pools and the historic covered bazaar. The evening features a Sira Night experience before overnight accommodation in Sanliurfa.
The morning is devoted to Gobeklitepe, located roughly 15 km northeast of Sanliurfa on an elongated mountain ridge. The site dates to approximately 10,000 BC and features carved T-shaped pillars arranged in circular enclosures.
From there, the tour continues to Karahantepe, situated 46 km east of Gobeklitepe and currently under active excavation as part of the Tas Tepeler project. The afternoon covers Harran's distinctive beehive architecture and the Bazda Caves stone quarry before the transfer back to Sanliurfa airport for the return flight to Istanbul.
Urfa Castle stands on a Neolithic settlement area and features two monumental Corinthian-style columns erected by King Manu IX of Edessa between 240 and 242 AD. The castle offers panoramic views across the city and the Ainzelha valley below.
The Halilur Rahman Mosque complex adjacent to the fish pools incorporates a structure that was converted from a church to a mosque in 1956, as noted in its mihrab inscription. The cave of the Prophet Abraham, embedded in the hillside nearby, is a site of active religious visitation.
Harran is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and retains a cluster of distinctive beehive-shaped mud-brick houses unique to this part of Mesopotamia. Biblical accounts place Abraham and his family here for a period before their departure toward Canaan.
The site offers exceptional photographic opportunities and a sense of architectural continuity that stretches back millennia. Excavations and preserved ruins within the old city walls round out the visit before the group departs for the airport.
