Benagil Kayak Tour — Catamaran and Kayak Adventure to the Benagil Caves
Paddle through hidden sea caves and golden cliffs along one of Europe's most spectacular coastlines.
The Benagil Kayak Tour combines a comfortable catamaran cruise from Portimão with a guided kayak exploration of the Algarve's most celebrated sea caves, including the iconic Gruta de Benagil. Passengers travel along a dramatic stretch of coastline before launching kayaks directly into the cave network.
Departing from Marina de Portimão aboard the Seasiren II, the route passes landmarks including Castelo de São João do Arade, the village of Carvoeiro, Farol de Alfanzina, and a series of sculpted sandstone cliffs before reaching the Benagil area. The 30-minute passage by catamaran provides context for the landscape before the paddling begins.
Experienced local guides lead small groups through sea caves accessible only by water, sharing observations on the coastal geology, marine life, and regional history along the way. Guests who prefer not to kayak are welcome to remain aboard the catamaran, which is equipped with a sun deck, restroom, and onboard beverages.
After the kayak session, a designated swimming stop allows guests to enter the clear Atlantic waters before the return journey to Portimão marina.
Tour Highlights
Enter the Gruta de Benagil and several lesser-known sea caves accessible only by kayak, away from boat traffic.
Travel the full stretch of coastline from Portimão to Benagil, taking in Carvoeiro, Algar Seco, and Praia da Marinha from the water.
A video recording of the tour is included, capturing paddle strokes, cave interiors, and coastal scenery.
All kayak equipment — kayak, paddle, life vest, seat, and windbreaker — is provided, along with a wetsuit in cooler months.
Guides share geological, ecological, and historical context about the caves and cliffs throughout the experience.
Non-paddling guests can relax on the catamaran sun deck with refreshments while the kayak group explores.
A scheduled swimming stop in crystal-clear coastal waters is included before the return to Portimão.
Itinerary Overview
Check in at Quiosque nº2, Avenida Rio Arade, at least 30 minutes before departure. Board the Seasiren II catamaran and receive a safety briefing from the crew.
The catamaran travels east along the Algarve coast, passing Castelo de São João do Arade, Praia dos Caneiros, Farol de Alfanzina, Algar Seco, and Praia do Carvalho. Guides provide commentary on the landmarks en route.
On arrival, guests receive kayak equipment and a paddle technique briefing. The group launches from the water and begins exploring the cave system, including the Gruta de Benagil and additional hidden sea caves.
After the kayak session, a stop near Praia da Marinha or a calm cove allows guests to swim in sheltered Atlantic waters before re-boarding.
The catamaran returns along the coast to the marina, completing the experience at the original departure point.
