How the Day Unfolds
Guests joining the pickup option are collected from Akureyri Backpackers Hostel. Those arriving by private vehicle follow directions to the rafting base camp at Hafgrímsstaðir and should arrive before the briefing begins.
At the base camp, guides walk all participants through paddle techniques, river safety procedures, and equipment use. Wetsuits, helmets, and buoyancy aids are provided before the group moves to the river entry point.
The rafting section covers the full canyon run on the East Glacial River, navigating Class 4 to 4+ rapids through spectacular gorge scenery. The experience is physically engaging and designed to be challenging without requiring prior river skills.
After completing the river run, guests are transported back to Akureyri Backpackers Hostel or make their own way back if driving independently. Time is available to rest, eat, and change before the second activity.
The whale watching tour departs from the harbour, a short walk from the hostel. The vessel heads into Eyjafjord, where guides search for Humpback whales and other cetaceans across the fjord's deep water.
The whale watching vessel returns to Akureyri harbour to conclude the full-day experience. Guests are free to make their own onward arrangements from this point.
