Agia Irini Gorge and Sougia Beach Tour
A peaceful trek through one of Crete's most serene gorges, finishing at a quiet pebble beach away from the crowds.
The Agia Irini Gorge hike offers a refreshing alternative to the more visited trails of western Crete, guiding walkers through a shaded forest canyon before arriving at the tranquil shores of Sougia Beach. This 8-kilometre route combines natural beauty, mild terrain, and genuine Cretan character in a single half-day outing.
Running along the western slope of Pilafi Mountain, the gorge shelters hikers beneath a canopy of plane trees, pines, and cypresses that keep temperatures manageable even in mid-summer. Wild herbs and aromatic plants line the path, and in spring the sound of waterfalls accompanies much of the walk.
The route maintains a moderate difficulty level, with a maximum elevation change of around 500 metres and no technically demanding sections, making it accessible to most adults with a basic level of fitness. Drinking water springs are spaced regularly along the trail, and rest points with seating allow walkers to pause at their own pace.
At the end of the gorge, the small village of Sougia provides a gentle contrast to the trail: a wide pebble beach, local taverns, and a noticeably relaxed atmosphere that rewards the effort of the walk with a genuine sense of arrival.

Itinerary
The tour begins at the entrance to Agia Irini Gorge, where a small cafe offers coffee, snacks, and a chance to prepare before the walk. Drinking water springs are also available here from the start of the trail.
The trail enters the gorge and quickly transitions into a shaded forest corridor running along the western slope of Pilafi Mountain. Plane trees, pines, and cypresses form a natural canopy that reduces the heat considerably.
Midway through the 8-kilometre route, walkers pass rest areas with seating and additional water springs. In spring, waterfalls appear along this section, and wild herbs grow densely on either side of the path.
At the lower end of the gorge, a second cafe provides refreshments and a well-earned break before the final stage of the tour. The terrain by this point has levelled out considerably.
The tour concludes at the pebble beach of Sougia village, a wide and relatively quiet stretch of coastline with full beach facilities. Nearby taverns and cafes allow visitors to sample local Cretan dishes before the return journey.
