Golden Circle, South Coast, Snæfellsnes and Reykjavik Self-Drive Tour
Seven days of glaciers, geysers, black sand beaches, and volcanic peninsulas at your own pace.
This Iceland self-drive tour covers the country's most celebrated landscapes across seven days, guiding you through the Golden Circle, South Coast, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and the capital city of Reykjavik. Designed for independent travelers, the itinerary is structured yet flexible enough to accommodate personal interests and pace.
Beginning at Keflavik International Airport, you drive across the dramatic lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula before heading north to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and then east along the South Coast to the glacier lagoon. The route circles back through the volcanic heartland of the Golden Circle before concluding in Reykjavik.
Accommodation is arranged in comfortable 3-star hotels along the route, and a range of optional activities — from snorkeling between tectonic plates to exploring ice caves — allow you to tailor each day to your interests. The difficulty level is rated easy, making this route accessible to a wide range of travelers.
Iceland's weather and natural conditions can change rapidly, so flexibility is built into the schedule. Each destination on this route carries its own geological or historical significance, offering both visual impact and educational depth throughout the journey.
Tour Highlights
Stand at the diverging boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Watch Strokkur geyser erupt every 5 to 10 minutes at the Geysir Geothermal Area, shooting boiling water up to 40 meters into the air.
Walk beside Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and witness enormous icebergs drifting across 200-meter-deep glacial waters fed by Europe's largest ice cap.
Photograph Kirkjufell mountain alongside Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, one of Iceland's most recognizable natural compositions.
Visit Diamond Beach, where translucent icebergs carried from the lagoon wash ashore onto jet-black volcanic sand in a striking visual contrast.
Walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall and stand at the base of Skógafoss, two of the South Coast's most dramatic cascades.
Explore Reykjavik at your own pace, taking in Hallgrímskirkja, the Old Harbour, Harpa Concert Hall, and the Sun Voyager sculpture.
