The Silver Circle Super Jeep Adventure
A private journey through glaciers, lava falls, geothermal springs, and medieval history in Western Iceland.
The Silver Circle Super Jeep Adventure is a full-day private expedition that threads together Iceland's western highlands, tracing a route past glaciers, cascading waterfalls, ancient hot springs, and a village that shaped the country's literary identity. Over nine hours, the landscape shifts dramatically, offering a concentrated experience of what makes Iceland's western reaches so compelling.
Departing from Húsafell, the tour moves through Kaldidalur, a highland corridor that cuts between the Langjökull glacier and the Eiríksjökull ice cap. The road is raw and open, with few concessions to comfort, which is precisely what makes it memorable. Passengers in a purpose-built Super Jeep absorb terrain that most vehicles simply cannot access.
Borgarfjörður forms the tour's central chapter, drawing together the lava-filtered waters of Hraunfossar, the legend-laden Barnafoss, and the scholarly silence of Reykholt. Each stop adds a distinct layer — geological, folkloric, and historical — without ever feeling rushed. The return route along Hvalfjörður provides a final, quietly spectacular closing act before the day concludes.
Tour Highlights
Travel alongside Langjökull, Iceland's second-largest glacier, across the remote Kaldidalur highland road.
Witness Hraunfossar, where clear water seeps from beneath a lava field and spills into the Hvítá river in a long curtain of rivulets.
Visit Barnafoss, a turbulent gorge waterfall carrying one of Iceland's more sobering folk legends.
Explore Reykholt, the medieval home of Snorri Sturluson, and step into the ancient hot spring bath known as Snorralaug.
Stand at Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful geothermal spring, where boiling water surges from the earth at 180 liters per second.
Pass through Hvalfjörður, a deep fjord framed by steep mountains, on the scenic return leg of the journey.
Travel in a private Super Jeep, giving the group exclusive pace and access across Iceland's rugged western terrain.
Itinerary
The tour begins in Húsafell, a peaceful settlement surrounded by forest and mountain that serves as the gateway to Iceland's western interior. From here, the Super Jeep heads into the Kaldidalur highland route, passing near the historic site of Þingvellir before entering open glacial terrain. The lake of Sandkluftavatn offers a first pause, with wide views across the highland plateau.
The Kaldidalur road brings the group directly alongside Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in Iceland. The scale of the ice cap becomes apparent as the vehicle approaches, its upper ridges catching the light against an open sky. An optional excursion into the glacier through the man-made ice cave at "Into the Glacier" is available for those wishing to explore its interior tunnels and chambers.
In Borgarfjörður, the tour reaches two contrasting waterfalls within close proximity of each other. Hraunfossar emerges silently from the edge of the Hallmundarhraun lava field, its many small streams filtering through rock and vegetation before reaching the river. Barnafoss, just upstream, is louder and more forceful, with a folk story tied to loss and a mother's grief that gives the site an additional weight beyond its natural drama.
Reykholt is a small settlement with an outsized place in Icelandic cultural history. Snorri Sturluson, the 13th-century scholar responsible for the Prose Edda and the Heimskringla, lived and worked here. Visitors can see Snorralaug, a circular stone hot spring bath believed to be one of the oldest handmade structures in Iceland, and visit the Snorrastofa cultural center.
Deildartunguhver, located in the Reykholtsdalur valley, produces more hot water than any other spring in Europe, releasing approximately 180 liters of near-boiling water per second. The geothermal energy generated here is piped to heat homes and facilities in nearby towns. The surrounding area also supports a rare fern species, Blechnum Spicant, which thrives in the mineral-rich microclimate near the spring.
The return journey follows the shores of Hvalfjörður, a deep fjord whose name translates to Whale Fjord, tracing a scenic route between steep mountain slopes and calm water. The fjord contains hidden waterfalls and historical remnants that reward those who look beyond the obvious. It serves as a composed final passage before the group arrives back at the starting point.
