Etosha Safari Adventure: 5-Day Self-Drive Tour
Chart your own course through Namibia's wild heart, from Windhoek to the vast plains of Etosha National Park.
This Etosha self-drive safari puts you in command of a 5-day journey across one of southern Africa's most rewarding wildlife destinations. At your own pace and on your own schedule, you will navigate Namibia's open roads, stopping at historic towns before reaching the iconic floodplains of Etosha National Park.
Namibia rewards the independent traveller with wide tarred roads, minimal traffic, and a remarkable density of wildlife concentrated around waterholes. The country's scale and silence are part of the experience, and a self-drive format lets you linger at sightings, set your own departure times, and absorb the landscape without the constraints of a group tour.
From the culturally layered streets of Windhoek to the ancient saline pan of Etosha, the route crosses diverse terrain that ranges from savannah and woodland to semi-arid plains. Wildlife encounters can include elephant, lion, giraffe, black rhino, and the rare black-faced impala, a species found almost exclusively in Etosha.
This itinerary is rated very easy, making it suitable for first-time visitors to Africa, families, and travellers who prefer self-guided exploration with comfortable lodge accommodation along the way.
Tour Highlights
Game drives through Etosha National Park, one of the largest and most biodiverse parks in Africa, spanning 22,270 square kilometres of saline desert, savannah, and woodland.
Waterhole observation from resort camps inside Etosha, where elephant, lion, zebra, and rhino congregate, especially in the dry season when water is scarce across the park.
A scenic drive through the Waterberg region on day one, a landscape of red sandstone plateaus and dense bush that sets the tone for the journey north.
A stop in Okahandja, a town of deep cultural significance to the Herero people and site of the annual August pilgrimage to honour their great chiefs.
Windhoek city exploration, a compact and walkable capital that blends colonial-era German architecture with contemporary African urban life and excellent local cuisine.
Wildlife diversity that includes approximately 114 mammal species within Etosha, with the rare black rhino and black-faced impala among the most sought-after sightings.
A visit to the mysterious Lake Otjikoto near Tsumeb, a collapsed dolomite sinkhole lake surrounded by local legend and natural intrigue.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Windhoek International Airport and collect your rental vehicle at the depot, where you will receive a full briefing on the car and route. Drive north through Windhoek and Okahandja before reaching your lodge in the Waterberg region for your first overnight stay under Namibian skies.
After breakfast, continue north through Otjiwarongo, passing the Cheetah Conservation Fund and Otjiwarongo Crocodile Ranch, before stopping at Otavi and Tsumeb near the legendary Lake Otjikoto. Arrive at your lodge in the Etosha region and, if time allows, enter the park for an afternoon game drive before the gates close at sunset.
Spend a full day self-driving through Etosha, following the network of game-viewing roads at your own pace. Watch for big game at the park's famous waterholes, or return to the resort camp to observe animals drinking from the floodlit waterhole during the evening hours.
Depart Etosha after breakfast and retrace the scenic route south to Windhoek, arriving in the afternoon. Check in to your hotel and spend the evening exploring the capital's markets, restaurants, and historic streets.
