Via Ferrata in Benalauría: Thrilling Adventure with the Best Views of Costa del Sol
Ascend a dramatic canyon, cross two suspension bridges, and discover the Genal Valley from a perspective few ever see.
Via Ferrata Benalauría is an accessible yet exhilarating mountain route in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda, designed for beginners who are ready to step beyond the ordinary. In just two hours, participants climb 97 metres of fixed ironwork through a compact canyon before crossing two monkey bridges that deliver a genuine sense of exposure. The result is an honest introduction to via ferrata that leaves a lasting impression.
The Genal Valley is one of the least-visited corners of Andalusia, a landscape of chestnut forests, white villages, and river gorges that stretches between the Costa del Sol and the Sierra de las Nieves. Reaching its ridgelines on foot and ironwork offers a perspective that no road or viewpoint can replicate. South Coast Aventuras has selected this route precisely because the surroundings reward every metre of effort.
Guides provide all technical equipment on site, so participants arrive with nothing more than comfortable clothing and a sense of curiosity. Insurance, snacks, drinks, and photo and video coverage of the ascent are included, meaning the experience is self-contained from start to finish. Groups are kept small enough for each participant to receive attentive instruction and personal feedback throughout.
The K2 difficulty rating across all four dimensions — strength, psychological, resistance, and terrain — confirms that this is a well-balanced challenge rather than an extreme undertaking. Anyone in good general health aged 14 or above can complete the route. The activity runs year-round, adapting naturally to the mild climate that the Genal Valley shares with the broader Costa del Sol region.

Itinerary
The group assembles at the starting point, where guides distribute technical equipment, run through safety briefings, and ensure harnesses and helmets are correctly fitted before setting off.
A gentle 500-metre path leads through the valley landscape to the base of the via ferrata. This section allows participants to warm up and absorb the canyon surroundings at a relaxed pace.
Clipped onto the fixed iron route, the group climbs 97 metres through a compact canyon using iron staples and cables. Guides position themselves to assist and encourage at each technical section.
Near the summit, two suspended rope bridges — 6 and 7 metres in length — cross exposed sections of the canyon wall. This is the psychological centrepiece of the route and the moment most participants remember longest.
At the top, the Genal Valley opens up in full panorama. The group pauses here to enjoy the provided snacks and drinks while guides capture photo and video footage of the ascent.
The group descends via the approach path back to Puerto de Benalauría, where vehicles are waiting. Equipment is collected and the session concludes.
