Sunrise from the Top of Pedra da Macela by Paraty Tours
Watch the Atlantic sky ignite over mountains and sea from one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Serra da Bocaina.
The Pedra da Macela sunrise hike is a rare opportunity to stand above the clouds and witness the first light of day spill across Paraty, Cunha, Angra dos Reis, and the distant outline of Ilha Grande. The experience combines a moderate trail with one of the most layered panoramas on the entire Costa Verde. Few moments in nature rival watching the Atlantic coast emerge from darkness at this altitude.
Access begins along a vicinal road departing from KM 65 of the Estrada Paraty-Cunha, a historic mountain route that itself tells the story of this region. The path winds through dense Atlantic Forest, where the transition between mountain ecology and coastal humidity creates a striking and diverse landscape.
As you ascend, the interplay between the Serra da Bocaina highlands and the bay below becomes increasingly dramatic. By the time the summit of Pedra da Macela comes into view, the horizon stretches across multiple municipalities, giving a sense of geographic scale that is difficult to find elsewhere in this part of Brazil.

Itinerary
The group departs and travels to KM 65 of the Estrada Paraty-Cunha, the gateway to the vicinal road leading toward Pedra da Macela. This mountain road already offers striking views of the Serra da Bocaina foothills.
The hike starts along a path that follows a rural road into the Atlantic Forest. The early morning air and the forest canopy make for a cool and atmospheric start before the sun rises fully.
As the trail gains elevation, the vegetation shifts and gaps in the canopy begin to reveal the coastal landscape below. The interaction between mountain terrain and sea views grows more defined with every kilometer.
Reaching the top of Pedra da Macela, the group is positioned to observe the full sunrise panorama. On clear days, the view extends to Paraty, Cunha, Angra dos Reis, and Ilha Grande simultaneously.
After time at the summit, the group descends the trail and returns to the departure point. The total outing covers approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes from start to finish.
