5-Day Siwa Oasis Short Break from Cairo
From the battlefields of Alamein to the ancient springs of Siwa, a journey into Egypt's most remote corner
This Siwa Oasis tour from Cairo takes travelers deep into the Western Desert, connecting ancient history, World War II heritage, and raw Saharan landscapes across five days of guided exploration.
The route passes through El Alamein, site of one of the most pivotal battles of World War II, before reaching the Mediterranean coast at Marsa Matrouh and continuing southwest to the isolated Siwa Oasis. Few destinations in Egypt combine layers of civilization — Berber, ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman — with such dramatic natural surroundings.
At Siwa, the itinerary covers the Oracle Temple where Alexander the Great received confirmation of his divine lineage, the crumbling mud-brick citadel of Shali, and the freshwater springs that have sustained desert life for millennia. Desert safaris, fossil fields, flamingo-dotted lakes, and sand surfing round out the experience.
The pace is deliberately unhurried, allowing time at each site without rushing. Most activities are outdoors and at ground level, making this an accessible trip for travelers of varying fitness levels.
Tour Highlights
Walk through Shali, Siwa's ancient mud-brick citadel, and understand how an entire civilization built vertically from desert clay.
Visit the Temple of the Oracle at Aghurmi, where Alexander the Great was declared son of Amun and ruler of Egypt in 331 BC.
Take a 4x4 safari across the Great Sand Sea, passing prehistoric footprints, Cambrian coral fossils, and towering dunes.
Swim in the natural cold spring at Shiata Lake and relax in the hot spring at Bir Wahid, both located within the open desert.
Watch the sun set from Fitnas Island, a small rise surrounded by palm groves and salt lakes that turns gold at dusk.
Explore the Mountain of the Dead, where ancient rock-cut tombs including the Tomb of Si Amon preserve rare painted scenes.
Stop at the El Alamein War Museum and Commonwealth Cemetery, a sobering and historically significant memorial on the Mediterranean coast.
