Tour Itinerary
The tour begins at the North Gate, built in 1656 under Venetian rule. This was the obligatory entry point for all travellers arriving from the mainland, and the place where goods were inspected before entering the fortified city.
The main square has been the civic and religious centre of Trogir since the Middle Ages, bordered by the municipal loggia and the cathedral. St. Lawrence Cathedral was begun in the early 13th century on the ruins of a church destroyed by the Saracens and was not completed until the 17th century.
The main street follows the precise course of the Roman Decumanus Maximus, lined today with palaces and shops. At its southern end, the Riva promenade runs along the waterfront, offering views across the channel toward the island of Ciovo.
Kamerlengo Castle was constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century after their conquest of Trogir, serving as the main military stronghold on the western tip of the island. Nearby, the circular Saint Mark's Tower was built in the same era with a flared base designed to deflect cannon fire.
The South Gate, dating from the 16th century, once served as the main maritime entrance to the city, used by sailors and merchants arriving by sea. The adjacent Gothic church of Saint Dominique was founded by Dominican friars in 1265 and features a large rose window on its facade.
The tour concludes at the pedestrian bridge inaugurated in December 2024, connecting the UNESCO old town to Fortin Park across a canal that was once a defensive ditch. The crossing marks both the physical and symbolic boundary between centuries of fortified history and present-day Trogir.
