Ortigia Island & Sea Caves Private Boat Tour
Discover ancient coastlines, hidden sea caves, and crystal-clear waters on a private one-hour voyage around Ortigia.
The Ortigia Island boat tour offers an intimate look at one of Sicily's most storied landmarks, combining natural sea caves, historic fortifications, and freshwater springs into a single compact experience on the water.
Departing from Ponte Umbertino, the route traces both sides of the island, revealing perspectives that are simply inaccessible on foot. The shoreline shifts from rugged limestone cliffs to open promenades as the boat navigates between the Porto Piccolo and the Porto Grande.
Because this is a private tour, the pace and focus can be adjusted to suit your interests, whether you prefer to linger at the caves, take a short swim, or spend more time admiring the medieval architecture from the sea.
Tour Highlights
Three natural sea caves, including one with a distinctive heart-shaped entrance carved by centuries of wave action.
Close-up views of Castello Maniace, the imposing medieval fortress anchoring the southern tip of Ortigia.
The Fonte Aretusa, a rare freshwater spring that flows directly where the Ionian Sea meets the island's edge.
A refreshing swim stop in the clear coastal waters for those who wish to experience the sea up close.
A full circuit of Ortigia passing through Porto Piccolo, Lungomare di Levante, and Porto Grande in one seamless route.
Panoramic views of Siracusa's historic waterfront and its patron saint harbour dedicated to Santa Lucia.
Itinerary
The tour begins at the iconic bridge connecting Ortigia to the mainland. The boat heads toward Porto Piccolo, the small harbour historically dedicated to Santa Lucia, patron saint of Siracusa.
The boat enters the area of the three marine grottos along the northwestern coastline. The highlight is a heart-shaped cave formed naturally by the action of the sea against the limestone cliffs.
Rounding the island, the route follows the eastern promenade before reaching the massive Norman fortress of Castello Maniace at the island's southern tip. The fortification is best appreciated from the water, where its full scale becomes clear.
The boat passes the Fonte Aretusa, a celebrated ancient freshwater spring. Guests have the opportunity to swim in the surrounding crystalline waters before the tour continues.
The final leg crosses the Porto Grande, Siracusa's large natural harbour, before passing back under Ponte Umbertino to the departure point, completing the full circuit of the island.
