Erice and Segesta Multilingual Group Tour from Palermo
A journey through ancient hilltop villages, sacred salt flats, and timeless Elymian ruins in western Sicily.
This full-day Erice and Segesta tour from Palermo takes you deep into the layered history of western Sicily, from the medieval streets of a hilltop town perched above the clouds to one of the best-preserved ancient Greek temples on the island. The pace is easy, the landscapes are striking, and the stories behind each site reward every step.
Erice sits at roughly 750 metres above sea level, and the view across the Tyrrhenian Sea and over the salt flats below gives some sense of why the Elymians chose this location for a sanctuary to the goddess Venus. The cobbled lanes, the Norman castle, and the centuries-old pastry tradition have all survived remarkably intact, making a walk through the town feel genuinely unhurried.
Between the two main destinations, the route passes through the Trapani salt flats, a flat coastal landscape of windmills, shallow evaporation pans, and pale mounds of harvested salt. The tradition of extracting salt from seawater here dates back to Phoenician times and continues today as a working industry and a protected natural reserve.
Segesta adds a second, very different layer to the day. The unfinished Doric temple, built in the late fifth century BC, stands alone on a hillside with no adjacent town visible, surrounded by scrub-covered slopes and open sky. The site also contains a well-preserved Greek theatre higher up the hill, offering wide views over the valley below.

Itinerary
The tour departs from one of the designated meeting points in central Palermo or at Mondello Beach. Participants are collected and the group heads west toward the Trapani province. Note: the itinerary may be operated in the opposite direction.
The group arrives in Erice, perched at around 750 metres above sea level. Time is given to explore the cobbled streets, visit the Norman castle area, and browse the famous local pastry shops where marzipan and almond sweets have been crafted for centuries.
En route between Erice and Segesta, the tour passes the historic salt pans stretching along the Trapani coastline. The working salt flats and their restored windmills illustrate an ancient harvesting tradition that predates Roman occupation of the island.
The group visits the Segesta archaeological site, home to an extraordinary unfinished Doric temple dating to the late fifth century BC. The temple sits on an open hillside with unobstructed views over the surrounding landscape. Admission to the archaeological park is not included in the tour price.
After visiting Segesta, the group travels back east and is dropped off at the same meeting point where the tour began. Return timing will vary depending on the direction in which the itinerary is operated that day.
