Private Tour West Crete: Chania, Rethymno Old Town and Kournas Lake
A full-day journey through Venetian ports, freshwater legends, and the lush landscapes of western Crete.
This private tour of West Crete takes you through three of the island's most compelling destinations — the storied streets of Chania, the serene shores of Kournas Lake, and the atmospheric Old Town of Rethymno — all in a single, unhurried day.
Western Crete is distinctly different from the rest of the island. Its verdant hillsides, olive groves, and mountain backdrops set the scene for a region that has preserved its character across centuries of Venetian, Ottoman, and Byzantine influence.
Travelling as a private group means the pace is yours. You will not be rushed between stops, and your guide can adjust time at each location based on your interests. This is not a coach tour — it is a curated experience through some of the most historically layered corners of the Mediterranean.
Tour Highlights
Walk the narrow lanes of Chania Old Town, shaped by Venetian, Ottoman, and Byzantine history across centuries.
Visit Kournas Lake, the only natural freshwater lake on Crete, set against a backdrop of the White Mountains.
Explore the Fortezza Fortress in Rethymno, a 16th-century Venetian stronghold with panoramic views over the town and sea.
Discover the Venetian lighthouse and the Rimondi Fountain in Rethymno, enduring symbols of the town's layered past.
Take in the scenery of the White Mountains, which frame the western landscape in dramatic fashion throughout the day.
Experience two of Crete's most celebrated old towns in a single private outing, without the interruptions of group travel.
Itinerary
The tour begins in Chania, historically the island's capital and widely regarded as its most beautiful city. Your guide will lead you through the five quarters of the Old Town, where small stone houses line narrow streets that have changed little over the centuries. The Venetian Port remains the centrepiece of the area and a defining feature of Chania's skyline.
From Chania, the route heads inland to Kournas Lake — the only natural freshwater lake on the island of Crete. At 25 metres deep and surrounded by the foothills of the White Mountains, the lake has inspired local legends for generations. The area is quiet and scenic, offering a genuine contrast to the coastal towns on either side of this stop.
The final destination is Rethymno, a town that balances history and everyday Cretan life in equal measure. Medieval buildings, Venetian-era cathedrals, and Ottoman mosques stand within walking distance of each other. The Old Town remains one of the best-preserved historic urban areas in the whole of Greece.
Within Rethymno, the 16th-century Fortezza Fortress rises above the port and offers sweeping views over the town's rooftops and the sea. Nearby, the Venetian lighthouse and the Rimondi Fountain on Platanos Square are further reminders of the town's long relationship with Venetian rule. The fountain's three lion heads have become one of Rethymno's most photographed details.
