Private South Coast Tour from Midgard
Waterfalls, black sand beaches, and glaciers — all in one extraordinary day along Iceland's most iconic coastline.
The Iceland South Coast private tour delivers an immersive journey through some of the most dramatic scenery on the planet, from thundering cascades to jet-black volcanic beaches sculpted by the Atlantic.
Traveling in a private group means the itinerary adapts to your pace, giving you more time at the places that move you most. A local guide accompanies you throughout, sharing stories, local knowledge, and an insider's eye for the landscape.
Pick-up is available from Reykjavík, Keflavík Airport, Selfoss, and the Midgard Base Camp area, making logistics straightforward regardless of where you are staying. All parking, navigation, and planning are handled so you can focus entirely on the experience.
The South Coast rewards visitors in every season. Winter brings dramatic skies and the possibility of northern lights on the return, while summer offers extended daylight that lets the waterfalls glow well into the evening.
Tour Highlights
Skógafoss is one of Iceland's widest and most powerful waterfalls, generating a permanent mist that produces vivid rainbows on sunny days.
Seljalandsfoss allows visitors to walk behind the curtain of water along a narrow path — a genuinely rare experience among European waterfalls.
Dyrhólaey is a dramatic basalt promontory with sheer cliffs and panoramic views stretching across the southern shoreline.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach features striking hexagonal basalt columns and powerful surf that makes it one of the most photographed beaches in the country.
The glaciers and ice caps visible along the route are among the largest in Europe, forming a constantly shifting landscape of ice, crevasses, and blue-tinted ridges.
The coastal road passes through sweeping lava fields and farmland backed by towering mountain ridges, offering near-continuous scenic interest between stops.
Itinerary Overview
The tour departs from Midgard Base Camp in Hvolsvöllur, with optional pick-up from Reykjavík, Keflavík Airport, and the Selfoss area. Travel time to the first stop depends on your chosen pick-up point.
The first major stop is Seljalandsfoss, where a path leads behind the falling water for an unusual perspective on this well-known cascade. The hidden waterfall Gljúfrabúi is also nearby and well worth the short detour.
Skógafoss drops 60 metres and spans 25 metres in width, producing a persistent mist and, in clear conditions, a visible rainbow arc. Stairs beside the falls lead to a viewpoint above the ridge.
The black sand beach at Reynisfjara and the clifftop viewpoint at Dyrhólaey form the southern edge of the day's route. Your guide will advise on wave safety at the beach, which is known for strong and unpredictable surf.
The return journey passes close to the Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull ice caps, whose lower tongues reach toward the coastal plain. Your guide provides context on how these glaciers have changed in recent decades.
The tour returns to Midgard Base Camp and, where applicable, continues to drop-off points along the route back to Reykjavík. Total duration varies by pick-up location.
